Last month in Huntington Beach, Hurley and the legendary Craig Stecyk III brought together a group of artists to create limited edition designs and screen prints on an etching press. Stecyk along with Jersey Joe, Dalek, Madsteez, Stecyk, Tim Hendricks, and the Hurley Art Department created a series of exclusive graphic tees – each available a week at a time for purchase here. Today is the last day to get some of the ones from Dalek featuring his old school space monkeys so make your move quick […]

Continuing to produce public displays of his geometric mastery, James Marshall aka Dalek (interviewed) recently painted another mural at the Hobie Surf Shop in Corona Del Mar. Orange County is kind of ground zero for fans of the American artist’s work because of his affiliation with Hurley – leading to many shows, product lines, and associated events in and around Hurley Space. Check out some more shots below… Photo credit: James Ng for Arrested Motion. Discuss DALEK here.
Following directly on from Part 1 of our coverage of the busy Space//Form opening, AM now delves a little deeper pictorially into the artwork created for this huge group exhibition of 110 artists with a series of pictures where the art is more viewable (like the Mark Dean Veca installation above). To recap, all of the participating artists were given an identical 10×10 inch cradled timber panel by exhibition sponsor Ampersand as the medium to work on. The exhibition curator, Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis chose a brief […]
Our Streets: World Roundup returns this week with this collaborative mural from Serbian twins Sobekcis and Zoer at the top of the list. Other walls to take note of come from Phlegm – Italy, Aryz – Denmark, Gr170 – Denmark, Sobekcis – Denmark, M-City – Poland, Interesni Kazki – Russia, Dalek – Califonia, Hendrik “ECB” Beikrich – South Korea (source), ROA – Illinois (source), Nychos, Rookie, […]
Tonight (September 7th) in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Flanders Gallery will be hosting Spectrum Analysis, a showing of new installations from James “Dalek” Marshall (interviewed). Continuing his exploration of abstract geometries, last seen in Orange County in July, Marshall will be filling the showspace with large-scale blue paintings executed on modular panels. Created last year during a residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, these diamond and starburst forms will interspaced with murals painted directly onto the gallery walls. Take a look at some shots of the work […]
As the opening of the Space//Form group exhibition draws ever nearer, and following on from our studio view, AM brings you a glimpse of some of the work in this huge show. Over 100 artists are participating in the exhibit, which opens on 6th September at Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. The artists were each given the same brief and the same materials to work with and asked to explore and represent their interpretation of space and form within either the natural or built environment. Each piece of […]
One of the most interesting things about curating a group exhibition of over 100 artists is getting to see behind the scenes as the artists develop their work for the show (Chloe Early seen above). Updates come constantly as the participants share their excitement about creating work for the show, and getting to see some of the creative process that goes into the work is always a pleasure. Space//Form opens in just a couple of weeks time now in Portland at Breeze Block Gallery and here […]
Following our recently curated group exhibitions in Hong Kong; East West Connect and Los Angeles; City of Fire, AM’s UK correspondent Sven Davis has branched out with his own curatorial endeavour Space//Form. The group exhibition brings together over 100 young contemporary artists, and opens 6th September at Portland’s Breeze Block Gallery. Curator, Sven Davis, has worked in architecture for over 20 years, so the thematic center of the exhibition is close to his heart as Space//Form centers around notions of the architectural landscape. Each of the […]
Tomorrow night (July 31st), in celebration of the US Open of Surfing 2012 (also see PUSH’s effort) and launch of the Phantom Fuse boardshort, Hurley presents STABILIMENTUM, an immersive new installation from James “Dalek” Marshall (interviewed). The event kicks off from 6-9PM at the Hurley H SPACE Gallery in Costa Mesa with a floor-to-ceiling display from Dalek which recalls his other shows at the gallery (see Prism Break & Psych Optic Black Light Fuzz). In addition to the art itself, the exhibit will feature a display of the Phantom Fuse-inspired product […]
Judging from this new ink piece from James Marshal aka Dalek (interviewed), he hasn’t completely killed off his space monkeys yet. Of course, his more abstract work also continues with an update of a mural he painted at the Hobie Surf Shop in Corona Del Mar, a completely new piece really. For those who still haven’t gotten enough after perusing the in-progress pics below, you can check out a video of the creation of the mural here. Discuss Dalek here.
