Preview / Interviews: Edwin Ushiro – “At Night, Lights Fell and Loved Ones Returned Home” @ Sloan Fine Art

As we mentioned in our teaser a couple weeks ago, Edwin Ushiro will be opening his show “At Night, Lights Fell and Loved Ones Returned Home” this Wednesday at Sloan Fine Art. AM was looking forward to this show after his impressive showing at Lebasse Projects last September and were lucky enough to be able to catch up with Edwin for an interview recently where he discusses his thoughts behind the show, some of his process, and LOST among other things. Take a look at […]

Teaser: Edwin Ushiro – “At Night, Lights Fell and Loved Ones Returned Home” @ Sloan Fine Art

Sloan Fine Art will be welcoming a new body of work from Edwin Ushiro at the end of this month entitled “”At Night, Lights Fell and Loved Ones Returned Home.” Ushiro’s nostalgic and hauntingly beautiful works are exactly that – paintings based on childhood memories and folklore typically involving ghost stories or the supernatural. For this exhibition in New York, he will “focus specifically on the mystery and histories held by abandoned and forgotten places” of course utilizing his special technique that creates the signature […]

Teaser: The LOST Underground Art Project @ Gallery 1988 (LA)

Some of us at the AM office are pretty hardcore LOST fans or Losties for those who are hip to the vernacular. That’s why we are looking forward to “The LOST Underground Art Project” opening this Wednesday, December 15th, at Gallery 1988 in LA. Some of you may be aware of the LOST prints that have been released periodically through DamonCarltonAndAPolarBear over the last several months. Well, for the first time, all 16 prints (released and sold out) will be seen in one room. More […]

Openings: LeBasse Projects “Go East” NYC Pop-Up Show

AM stopped by last week to check out the Culver City based LeBasse Projects and the art that traveled to New York for their “Pop Up” show.  Only in town for less than a week, “Go East” showcased the work of Yoskay Yamamoto (featured and seen above), Tessar Lo, Edwin Ushiro, Joao Ruas, Eric Fortune (interviewed), Mia (interviewed), and Nate Frizzell (featured). Judging from what we saw, we look forward to the next trip east from this group of fresh young artists. More pics after […]

Releases: Edwin Ushiro – New Prints

Edwin Ushiro has just released two new prints from last month’s hauntingly beautiful LeBasse Projects‘ show, “Softly Encompassing the Womb” (covered). “Time Therefore Remained Idle Without Light Extruding Acceptance,” pictured above, is Edwin’s interpretation of a Japanese turned Hawaiian ghost story from his youth, while “Rediscovery of the Infinite Stars Inside the Shell,” pictured after the jump, is a self portrait of the artist with his childhood pet, “Rusty.” Moderately priced at one hundred and two hundred and fifty dollars a piece, Edwin’s two new […]

Openings: Edwin Ushiro – “Softly Encompassing the Womb” @ LeBasse Projects

Something about LeBasse Projects’ new space brings out the best in its stable of artists. With Tessar Lo and Yoskay Yamamoto’s (interviewed) taking it up another level (here & here), Edwin Ushiro could not help but elevate his game for his solo that opened last weekend, “Softly Encompassing the Womb.”  With a body of work inspired by childhood ghost stories he heard growing up in Hawaii, Ushiro impressed the crowd with the meaningful and personal work as well as dazzled eyes with his new vibrant […]

Preview/Video: Edwin Ushiro – “Softly Encompassing the Womb” @ LeBasse Projects

Edwin Ushiro is making his bid for collectors to take notice on a jam-packed week of art coming up. With big shows almost everyday starting on Wednesday, an artist really has to bring his “A game” to get some love this week. Luckily, judging from what we have seen and by the trailer video by Modus Films for “Softly Encompassing the Womb,” Ushiro has done just that. With his unique blend of Hawaiian and Japanese aesthetics, his vibrant paintings are a breath of fresh air […]

Teaser: Edwin Ushiro – “Softly Encompassing the Womb”

Here’s a pretty sweet piece from Hawaii native Edwin Ushiro’s upcoming show opening September 12th at LeBasse Projects. Two things that stand out about Ushiro’s work are the special “look” he has to his work that is a result of a special process he uses (more on this at a later time) and his talent of storytelling – something he talks about in this a thousand stories interview. We are looking forward to seeing more “island” infused imagery and are planning more coverage of this […]
