Preview: “Summer Invitational” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Summer group shows during the traditional down time for galleries is a good way to gauge the direction a gallery is going. For their 2011 Annual Summer Invitational, slated to open on August 10th, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York will be featuring an international group of artists including Daniel Martin Diaz, Eric Fortune, Hello Monsters, Edwin Ushiro, Dick Chicken, Melissa Haslam, Above, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Yuko Shimizu, Ashley Wood, Jennifer Delilah and Meryl Smith. Preview: SugiPOP! @ Portsmouth Museum of Art

One of the most exciting shows we’ve recalled writing about that takes place in New Hampshire is coming up.  SugiPOP! is co-curated by Beau Basse of LeBasse Projects and will take up residence at the Portsmouth Museum of Art.  It is an exhibition centered around Sugi (meaning “too much”), which is contemporary art inspired by anime, manga and comics.  It includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, videos and original artwork used to make anime films and manga comics. Friends and LA-based artists Edwin Ushiro’s (interviewed) and Yoskay Yamamoto (featured) made their way northwest to attend the opening of their latest joint show at the Roq La Rue a couple of weeks ago. Yoskay bought some works on a new medium for him – paper – as well as some sweet wood sculptures all entitled “lost stories and found memories”. Preview: Edwin Ushiro – “Preceding Sunday” @ Roq La Rue

You may remember us showing you a piece for Edwin Ushiro’s (interviewed) show, “Preceding Sunday”, at the Roq La Rue Gallery. We now have a couple more images to share with you ahead of tomorrow night’s (Sept 10) opening in Seattle. Edwin (who will be showing jointly with Yoskay Yamamoto) also has a surprise for fans attending his opening – 30 limited edition diecuts to giveaway – you just have to tell him a ghost story. Teaser: Edwin Ushiro – “Preceding Sunday” @ Roq La Rue

Representing the 808, Edwin Ushiro brings his lush paintings infused with island imagery to the Roq La Rue Gallery on September 10th. “Preceding Sunday” will be a collection of works from the Hawaiian native filled with nostalgic elements from his childhood, all created with his unique technique giving his paintings a ethereal and almost glowing effect like the piece above – “All Signals Configuring to a Position Seeping from Words Either Unspoken or Intangible”. Openings: LeBasse Projects (Culver City Artwalk)

The first stop of the Culver City Artwalk for AM was the group show at LeBasse Projects. Along with a strong lineup of gallery regulars, artists new to us such as Jean-Pierre Roy were featured during this annual event. Preview: Aftershock LA – Art Auction Benefit

An eclectic art show and event, Aftershock LA, organized by Cafe Mode, is set to open tonight, May 15th at the Royal/T Cafe. The benefit (tickets $25 at the door) is put on to help raise money for Build Change, an international non-profit that designs earthquake-resistant house in developing countries and trains people to build them. We recently stopped by Sloan Fine Art in NY to check out a mini-solo show by Edwin Ushiro (interviewed). “At Night, Lights Fell and Loved Ones Returned” featured five new paintings centered around the theme of abandoned spaces and the stories they told. Openings: LeBasse Projects San Francisco Group Exhibition

AM recently swung by San Fran’s Japantown to check out the opening of LeBasse Projects weekend pop up gallery. The four day show highlights several members of LeBasse’s roster, artists like Yoskay Yamamoto (featured), Nate Frizell (featured) and Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) were all on hand to celebrate the opening. Additionally, Beau stepped up his game with a couple curve balls for SF residents, debuting some new pieces by internationally renowned artists Herakut (interviewed), Seonna Hong and Alexandros Vasmoulakis.
