With this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii winding down over the weekend, it’s now time to take look at some of the finished murals for the annual event. POW! WOW! Hawaii ’16 / Streets: In Progress

Starting this week, artists have been hard at work painting murals for this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii. Beautifying the streets of Kaka’ako in Oahu with their imagery, the participants get to enjoy the tropical weather and throngs of fans as they leave their mark at the annual event. Here’s a look at some of the work in progress including a huge piece from Audrey Kawasaki (seen above). Along with the mural painting, there are also many associated events so check out the entire schedule here. Discuss POW! […]

Showing: Fifth Annual “Supersonic Invitational” @ Spoke Art

If you attended any of the previous Supersonic Invitational shows, you know you’re in for a treat. We were unable to attend the reception last Saturday night at Spoke Art, but we met up with the curator/art blogger, Zach Tutor, earlier in the day for a look at all the artwork. Zach’s line up included over 75 artists from all over the globe. Supersonic Art has accrued over 500,000 followers worldwide and it seems like this show gets bigger and better each year. It also […]

Recap: Edwin Ushiro – “The Study of Life as Things” @ Giant Robot 2

We stopped Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles earlier this week to see the solo from Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) who had a wonderful series of drawings on display made from ballpoint pen, markers, pens, color pencils and graphite. Perhaps it’s the translucent paper used for these new pieces, but the translucent and ethereal look draws the viewer in for a second look to try and decipher how the Los Angeles-based artist achieves the effect. This transparency and glowing look would have been familiar to fans of his larger paintings, a […]

Previews: Edwin Ushiro – “The Study of Life as Things” @ Giant Robot 2

This Saturday, July 18th, at Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles, Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) will be unveiling new works for his latest solo entitled The Study of Life as Things. Most of the drawings are 8.5″ x 11″ and done with graphite, ink and ballpoint pens, tools the locally-based artist used during his intermediate school days. Making this choice draws Ushiro deeper into the nostalgia that is evident is his work, a look back at the memories from his days growing up on the islands of Hawaii. Discuss Edwin […]

Previews: Edwin Ushiro – “Gathering Whispers” @ Giant Robot 2

Last we covered a solo show from Edwin Ushiro (interviewed), it was 2013 at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles where an amazing piece caught our eye. Come July 12th, the locally-based artist with a unique creative process will be opening an exhibition at Giant Robot 2 entitled Gathering Whispers featuring new and old work. We look forward to seeing the ethereal and luminous imagery from Ushiro again in person as he explores his memories of childhood summer moments on Maui. He explains – “This series captures my […]

Openings: “Buddy System Invitational” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Earlier this month, the Buddy System Invitational (curated by Sven Davis) opened at the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. The group exhibition centered on the interesting concept having each of the 22 invited artists bring along a fellow artist to exhibit alongside them with each contributing one 16 x 20″ & one 8 x 8″ artwork. Take a look at some photos from the opening below as well as the list of artists below and their “buddies.” Andrew Schoultz – Gianluca Franzese, Ben Venom – Megan Gorham, Brendan Monroe – Anders Oinonen, […]

Openings: “Wider than a postcard” & olive47 – “bonita bonita” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. The work was hung on the walls in grids of 24 cards, each echoing the aspect ratio of the individual works themselves as each work was 6×4 inches. The variance of work encompassed photography […]

Previews: “Wider than a postcard” @ Breeze Block Gallery

On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. With over 200 artists and 400 individual works, this exhibition looks to be both bigger than the previous event and also smaller at the same time as all of the artworks are postcard sized at 6×4 inches. Each artist is either making work on a found / owned postcard and adapting / adding […]
