Openings: “Wider than a postcard” & olive47 – “bonita bonita” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. The work was hung on the walls in grids of 24 cards, each echoing the aspect ratio of the individual works themselves as each work was 6×4 inches. The variance of work encompassed photography […]

Previews: “Wider than a postcard” @ Breeze Block Gallery

On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. With over 200 artists and 400 individual works, this exhibition looks to be both bigger than the previous event and also smaller at the same time as all of the artworks are postcard sized at 6×4 inches. Each artist is either making work on a found / owned postcard and adapting / adding […]

Openings: Emma Tooth – ‘Concilium Plebis’ @ Lazarides Outsiders Gallery

Hopefully you caught our interview with Emma Tooth recently just ahead of her London solo opening at the Lazarides Outsiders Gallery, if not you can check it out here. AM went along to the opening of Concilium Plebis to check out the work for ourselves down in the dungeon. We’ve already seen some of the series of paintings before at her recent exhibition at Derby Museum earlier this year, and also when we visited Emma in her studio, but there was a healthy mixture of […]

Interviews: Emma Tooth – ‘Concilium Plebis’ @ Lazarides Outsiders Gallery

Emma Tooth’s ‘Concilium Plebis’ series of oil paintings have been described as “Extraordinary portraits of ordinary people.” This week sees the Derbyshire based artist open her London solo show at the Lazarides’ Outsiders Gallery, as well as making her debut showing in the United States in Thinkspace’s five year anniversary show. AM caught up with Emma just ahead of the exhibition, which opens on Thursday 4th November, and put a few questions to the exciting young artist. Check out our interview and some further preview […]

Preview: Thinkspace Five Year Anniversary Show

Coming this Saturday night, our friends at the Thinkspace Gallery will be holding their Five Year Anniversary Show. As you might expect, with their storied history and drawing from their large roster of artists, the group show is shaping up to be pretty epic. It looks like all the artists are putting some of their best work together – see the Natalia Fabia’s (interviewed) piece above – so make sure you attend the opening on November 6th! We have more preview images for you after […]

Openings: Emma Tooth – “Extraordinary Paintings of Ordinary People” @ Derby Museum and Art Gallery.

AM went along to the opening of Emma Tooth’s exhibition “Extraordinary paintings of Ordinary People” this weekend at Derby Museum and Art Gallery. Lavishly dressed for the occasion in one her own creations, Ms. Tooth’s paintings were spread across two rooms of the Museum, and as we mentioned last week, both mixed in with the permanent collection of 18th Century artist Joseph Wright, and also in her own exhibition space with Wright’s paintings interspersed between Emma’s work. It was a treat so see paintings from […]

Preview: Emma Tooth – “Extraordinary Portraits of Ordinary People” @ Derby Museum & Art Gallery

This Friday, July 2nd, sees Emma Tooth’s debut museum showing open at Derby Museum and Art Gallery in an artistic showdown 250 years in the making!. Emma Tooth vs. Joseph Wright of Derby come together in “Extraordinary Portraits of Ordinary People”. AM thinks that Emma may have the edge over Joseph, with him being deceased and all, but we look forward to this bout featuring the two Derbyshire based painters. Emma’s Consilium Plebis paintings will be exhibited alongside the 18th Century painter’s work from the Museum’s […]

Studio Visits: Emma Tooth

Emma Tooth first caught AM’s eye nearly a couple of years ago with a showing at Bohemia Gallery in York. A simple drive past the gallery, where one of the paintings from her “Consilium Plebis” series was displayed in the window and BOOM, we were hooked. Eager to find out more about this artist and her powerful hyper-real work, we found out that she had a solo show upcoming at the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle, which we duly checked out and were equally impressed by. […]
