Auctions: Bonhams “Urban Art Sale” Results (September)

Last Wednesday, Bonhams hosted their September Urban Art Sale to a “packed house” at the New Bond Street location in Central London. As we highlighted the strength of some recent Banksy results in our overview and analysis of his Top 25 Most Expensive Works Ever, money appears to continue pouring into street art unimpeded at the auction level, despite the general malaise evident in the financial markets. Closing just last weekend, the Aki Gallery in Taiwan hosted Ai Yamaguchi’s new body of work entitled kumagakure or hidden in clouds. After ten straight days of painting, albeit with the help of some university art students, Dalek (interviewed) has completed a massive four panel, site-specific installation within the Birmingham Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Alabama. Last week at their Central Hong Kong space, Gagosian Gallery opened an exhibition of work from New York-based contemporary artist Richard Prince. Los Angeles contemporary art staple Blum & Poe was yet another in a seemingly never ending stream of must-see booths at the main fair, Art Basel Miami Beach. Of particular interest was a massive new work by Takashi Murakami, exhibiting the Japanese pop art icon’s unique range and continued evolution within his self-branded “superflat” style.
