Basel Week Miami ’13: PISTON HEAD & Colette x Alchemist: Art Drive Thru

Aside from the major fairs operating during Art Basel Week in Miami, there are countless art shows, launches and parties occurring during this tightly packed period. One unique building housed two notable ABMB events. The Pritzker Architecture Prize winning structure (designed by Herzog & de Neuron) held a great exhibition entitled PISTON HEAD: Artists Engage the Automobile. This show utilized the top floor and held a selection of classic automobiles reinterpreted by a distinguished group of artists including Ron Arad, Bruce High Quality Foundation, César, Dan Colen […]

If you have been following AM over the years, you will have noticed we have teamed up with UK-based artist and illustrator Von (interviewed) for giveaways in the past. This time around, he has graciously offered up one of his new “Motion” Collector’s Edition Box Set featuring his familiar bird imagery to one of our lucky readers. The hand made box set of five prints comes in an edition of 50 with each measuring at 40 x 30 cm, and costs £225 (available for preorder now here). To qualify for the […]

Basel Week Miami ’13 : Tracey Emin – “Angel Without You” @ MOCA (Miami)

We made sure to stop by the Miami Museum of Contemporary Art while in town for Art Basel Week to take in an impressive collection of works from Tracey Emin. Entitled Angel Without You, the exhibition includes the Why I Never Became a Dancer video purchased in 1998 by the MOCA, the first American museum to acquire work from the UK-based artist. Also included is a wide selection of the neon works she has become famous for including a large piece created for the courtyard that inspires the exhibition’s title. Take a look at […]

Openings: Mike Leavitt – “Empire Peaks” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, we stopped by the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York to check out a new showing from Mike Leavitt (interviewed) entitled Empire Peaks. Showing alongside Riusuke Fukahori’s work, which also had a three-dimensional feel to it, the new body of work from the Seattle-based Leavitt featured a mashup of historical figures and Star Wars characters, something we gave you a glimpse of in our earlier studio visit. Take a look at some photos of the new sculptures, like the Ghandi x Yoda figure above… Discuss Mike Leavitt here.

Basel Week Miami ’13: Art Basel First Look (Part I)

Today marked the official opening of the Art Basel main fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center, but yesterday was the exclusive First Choice & Vernissage where a majority of the high profile buying action took place. AM took its annual pilgrimage to Florida to catch the offical launch of Art Basel Week Miami as the flagship fair launched with a slew of household names such as Murakami (seen above), Miro, Koons, Emin, Longo, Calder, Tomaselli, Kusama, Sherman, Nara, Basquiat and many more were featured at one of […]

Openings: Kris Kuksi – “Revival” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

The Joshua Liner Gallery in New York recently opened a solo exhibition from Kris Kuksi entitled Revival. The intricate and complex sculptural works from the Kansas-based artist plays a perfect contrast to the deceptively simple works from Riusuke Fukahori, who is concurrently showing in the same gallery. Kuksi’s mixed media assemblages explore the dark sides of the human psyche with ornate representations created from model kits and other materials that he has re-appropriated. His works need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated, but for those unable […]

Openings: Riusuke Fukahori – “The Painted Breath” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last month, the Joshua Liner Gallery in Chelsea presented all new works from Yokohama-based artist Riusuke Fukahori in his New York solo debut. The self-described goldfish fanatic keeps many of them around his studio for inspiration as well as considers them a metaphor for his life. Utilizing a resin technique that took over 8 years to perfect, the layered pieces almost look too real to be paintings, especially when presented in containers that are often associated with the fish in real life. Take a look at more photos as well […]

Openings: AJ Fosik – “Against The Infinite” @ Jonathan LeVine

A couple weeks ago, AM stopped by the Jonathan LeVine Gallery to check out new works from AJ Fosik collectively entitled Against The Infinite. Inspired by The Denial of Death, a 1973 Pulitzer Prize-winning work of psychology and philosophy by Ernest Becker, the new sculptural works explore the idea that humanity has an “inherent struggle between its dualistic nature—a physical self and a symbolic self.” Along with free-standing works, there is also an installation piece from the Portland-based artist that is comprised of 30 individual animal faces […]

Studio Visits: Tessar Lo

A few weeks ago AM got a chance to visit with artist Tessar Lo at his Toronto studio. He was just coming off of recent group shows More Than Two (Let It Make Itself) at The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto and Buddy System at the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. Tessar’s process involves tapping into the unconscious, creating imagery that feels poignant despite its abstraction, using color and shape to convey unspoken meaning but maintaining a haunting familiarity. He challenges the viewer to digest the work without having something […]

Showing: Kevin E. Taylor – “Inner Wilderness” @ Rebekah Jacob Gallery

Currently in Charleston, South Carolina at the Rebekah Jacob Gallery, painter Kevin E. Taylor (seen with the gallery owner below) is holding a solo exhibition entitled Inner Wilderness. For this showing, the Bay Area-based artist has presented a diverse selection of large scale work including his depictions of the natural world rendered with architectural elements as well as pieces where the animals from different paintings are in communication with each other. Take a look at more photos below… Photo credit: Jonathan Baillet (portraits) & Rick Rhodes (installation) courtesy of […]
