Recap: Art Market San Francisco 2017

A couple weeks ago the seventh edition of Art Market San Francisco returned to the Fort Mason’s Festival Pavilion to the delight of collectors and art fans in the Bay Area. Featuring works from artists working with an international selection of 80 different galleries, the event looked to have something for everyone. Fashion: James Jean x Prada 2018 Resort Collection

Following up on his work with Prada in 2008 and other projects through the years, James Jean (interviewed) has collaborated with the Italian fashion house on part of their 2018 resort collection. Staged for the first time at the Fondazione Prada Osservatorio in Milan, the runway show featured the illustrator and visual artist’s imagery prominently on parkas, a pantsuit, dresses as well as many of the handbags. Streets: Banksy (Dover)

Previews: KAWS – “FAR FAR DOWN” @ Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis

Today at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, KAWS will be continuing his bevy of museum exhibitions with a new showing entitled FAR FAR DOWN. The Brooklyn-based artist has prepared a mural of his snoopy inspired black & white abstractions on CAM’s 60-foot long Project Wall, with the the work serving as a backdrop for three new paintings. Faile Ceramic Tile House Installation (Venice)

Recently in Venice, California, Faile (featured) completed an tile installation that wrapped around the facade of one of the housesoff a side street of Abbot Kinney (741 California Avenue). If you recall, the Brooklyn-based duo have worked with tiles before in some of their installations like the Faile Temple (covered). Openings: Robert Williams – “Slang Aesthetics!” @ Fort Wayne Museum of Art

Last month, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art (in association with Thinkspace Gallery) hosted the opening of Robert Williams’ Midwestern debut. Streets: Kenny Scharf (Los Angeles)

Recently in Culver City, California, Kenny Scharf (interviewed) was able to paint some of his signature characters on the sides of a building overlaid over a colorful background of drips. It looks like while there, he also took time to continue his series of what he calls Karbombz where he paints the outside of a lucky fan’s automobile. Previews: Swoon – “To Accompany Something Invisible” @ Allouche Gallery

Tonight (April 27th) in New York, Swoon (interviewed) will be opening a new solo entitled To Accompany Something Invisible at Allouche Gallery. The comprehensive new body of work from the Brooklyn-based artist will feature some beautiful installation boxes, prep sketches and preliminary paper cutouts, as well as works on mylar, wood cuts and found objects. Rounding out the show in the Meatpacking District will be a look at elements of her studio practice on opening night including interactive printing demonstrations and paper cutting. Showing: Haroshi – “GUZO” @ Nanzuka gallery

Nanzuka Gallery in Tokyo recently opened the long awaited solo by local artist Haroshi (featured). After many successful shows worldwide, Guzo is the first major exhibition for the artist in his hometown. For this showing, the Japanese artist worked on a new concept and created a series of over 20 figurines carved from salvaged skate decks. After trying several different techniques of repurposing old skateboards over the years, Haroshi went back to the original concept of compressing multiple boards together and then using the resulting solid wooden slab as carving material. Showing: Mitar Matich – “Encaustics” @ Galerija Juraj Klovich

On April 13th, Mitar Matich introduced his latest body of work at Juraj Klovich Gallery in Rijeka, Croatia. Named after the ancient technique of hot wax painting, Encaustics consists of mostly medium and large size works depicting wildlife caught with camera traps.
