Upcoming: KAWS (VR Experience) @ New York Public Library

Tomorrow, January 29th (1-4pm), at the New York Public Library, Visionaire will unveiling its latest virtual reality experience featuring the work of KAWS. Previews: Ben Tolman – “WELTSCHMERZ” @ Gallery Neptune and Brown

Gallery Neptune and Brown in Washington, DC, will be holding the opening reception (5-7pm) tomorrow night (January 28th) for Ben Tolman’s new solo show. Collectively entitled WELTSCHMERZ, or WORLD PAIN in German, the new detailed drawings (ink and gouache on paper) from the locally-based artist tries to draw attention to ideas like corporate greed, dirty politics, and poverty. The compositions and imagery seem to take influence from artists like Hieronymus Bosch and M.C. Escher and must be seen in person to fully appreciate. Discuss Ben Tolman here.

Showing: Henry Gunderson – “Shoes Etc.” @ 247365

Currently at 247365 in New York, Henry Gunderson has a show on view entitled Shoes Etc consisting of five new paintings and a sculpture. For his second solo with the gallery, the talented young artist presents his shoe ecosystem paintings as the main attraction, each one centered on a theme or idea. Rounding out the exhibition is a sculpture hanging from the ceiling along with a shoe drive to support Shoes For All, giving visitors a chance to donate footwear to a good cause. Streets: Bezt (Etam Cru) x Natalia Rak // RAD Napa Project

Bezt from Etam Cru and Natalia Rak recently combined forces to kick off the RAD Napa project (curated by Thinkspace) by creating a new mural entitled Knocking On Heaven’s Door. The Polish artists soldiered through moments of pouring rain in California’s Napa Valley over the course of 12 days to paint their first collaborative wall together. The ongoing multi-year program will see more artists joining in to beautify 1.7 miles of the rail and bike corridor which will become the first art district in the Napa Valley. Currently at Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles, Patrick Martinez has a new versatile body of work on display entitled All Season Portfolio. Previews: “Psychological Realism” @ Booth Gallery

The first exhibition of the 2017 for Booth Gallery will be a group exhibition entitled Psychological Realism. Opening tomorrow night (January 21st), the show will explore the intricacies of identity through the eyes of Sergio Barrale, Daniel Bilodeau, Rune Christensen, Jesse Draxler, Erik Jones, Maria Kreyn, Adam Miller, Jean-Paul Mallozzi, David McLeod, Henrik Uldalen, and Jonathan Viner. Seen above is a something from McLeod as he ups the ante on his paint on glass works by utilizing multiple overlapping planes of glass.

Streets / Recap: Dubai Street Museum

The first phase of the Dubai Street Museum project was recently completed with the participation of 12 international and local artists, producing 16 murals on themes drawn from the UAE’s history and heritage. Organized by Brand Dubai, the creative arm of the Government of Dubai Media Office, and Dubai Municipality, this project seeks to highlight the UAE’s unique history, achievements and aspirations through public artworks. Upcoming: Alex Gross – “Antisocial Network” @ Corey Helford Gallery

On February 25th, Alex Gross (interviewed) will be opening a new show at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Antisocial Network, the new body of work from the locally-based artist continues to explore the idea of modern technology and his view of the ironic effect of social networks in eroding the personal relationships around us instead of bringing us closer.
