Upcoming: Audrey Kawasaki – “Interlude” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Fans of Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) may want to plan ahead to her next solo show coming up soon in Los Angeles. Opening on November 12th (alongside Stella Im Hultberg) at Thinkspace Gallery, her new body of work will be entitled Interlude, sure to feature her beautifully rendered sensual women with expert use of the wood grains in the painting surface. Recap: FestiWall 2016 (Italy)

The FestiWall public arts and music event recently wrapped up their 2016 edition with a small but effective roster of artists creating murals on the island of Sicily. An example of this was a lush piece entitled The Gardener (seen above) from Australian street artist Fintan Magee, a multi-story masterpiece painted over several days. Streets: Sage Vaughn (Los Angeles)

Recently in Los Angeles, on the border of Tarzana and Reseda, Sage Vaughn painted a mural on a side of a new structure on Ventura Blvd. The wall features a large-scale rendition of the locally-based artist’s instantly recognizable Wildflowers imagery, sprinkled with some mushrooms and other wildlife. Openings: Seonna Hong – “In Our Nature” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Last weekend, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco held the opening reception for a solo exhibition from Seonna Hong (interviewed). Entitled In Our Nature, the new body of work from the Los Angeles-based artist continued her landscape works featuring her human and animal companions surrounding by minimalistic environments created from abstract and loose elements. Previews: Emily Mae Smith – “Tesla Girls” @ Rodolphe Janssen

On October 13th, Rodolphe Janssen in Brussels will be showing for the first time the works of American artist Emily Mae Smith. The concept of Tesla Girls was inspired by Christopher Priest’s 1995 novel The Prestige and the idea of a faulty teleportation machine that creates nonidentical duplicates of a person. With this idea in mind, Smith is continuing her signature series of female portraits recognizable by round glasses, sharp hairstyles and lack of distinguishable features. After making an appearance in Hong Kong and Ibiza, KAWS’ monumental Clean Slate sculpture has reached its final resting place. The NorthPark Center in Dallas has added the piece featuring the Brooklyn-based artist’s signature Companion figures to their impressive permanent collection that includes Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Joel Shapiro, Jim Dine, Jonathan Borofsky, James Rosenquist, Antony Gormley, Barry Flanagan and Beverly Pepper, among others. Previews: Barry McGee // Sites Unseen @ Moscone Center Garage

Today, the 9th of October, public art by Barry McGee will be unveiled (3PM–6PM) at the Moscone Center Garage in downtown San Francisco’s Yerba Buena neighborhood. This will be an inaugural event for Sites Unseen, a nonprofit public art organization that joined with Ratio 3 gallery for this project. The installations by the world famous SF-based artist will feature multi-colored geo panels installed in several locations on the exterior of the Moscone Center Garage, along with hand painted signature characters. Streets: Lonac (Rijeka, Croatia)

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, Croatia, is continuing their public art project Spajalica (also see Isaac Cordal & Sebas Valasco) by adding another impressive mural to the streets of their town. Showing: Swoon – “Thalassa” @ Detroit Institute of Arts

At the end of last month, Swoon (interviewed) unveiled the latest iteration of her Thalassa installation at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Fans of the her work can check out the suspended sculptural piece at the Woodward Avenue entrance through the end of May of next year. This display of Swoon’s work will round out nicely her contributions to the art scene of the Motor City to go along with her exhibition opening soon at Library Street Collective as well as a mural project in the Jefferson-Chalmers district.
