Showing: RETNA // “The Future of the Past: Mummies and Medicine” @ Legion of Honor

Currently at the Legion of Honor, The Future of the Past: Mummies and Medicine is showing through August 2018 featuring RETNA’s (featured) distinct script in the background. The Los Angeles-based graffiti artist’s work has always been compared to and influenced in part by Egyptian hieroglyphs, so his career has come a full circle now with an invitation by the museum in San Francisco to paint the walls surrounding the exhibition. Os Gemeos Designs Felipe Massa Helmet

For this year’s Monoco GP, Os Gemeos have designed a special helmet for fellow countryman and Formula One driver Felipe Massa. With the relaxing of the rule forcing drivers to keep a single helmet design for a whole year (now allowed one special set of colors once per season), the Brazilian racer took advantage and asked the artistic duo to create the imagery for the new headwear including a painted version of his wife and son on the top. Take a look at more detailed views below… Photo […]

Streets: JR @ The Louvre (Part II)

After a first look at a new intervention at the Louvre from JR (interviewed) earlier this week, here are photos of the completed project. Pasting over the iconic pyramid in his signature technique was a time-consuming undertaking, but the impressive result is a testament to the French street artist’s artistic vision. Along with this “disappearance” trick, the TED winning artist will also be taking over the museum with conferences, masterclass, screenings, concerts, workshops on May 28th starting at 3pm. He further explains the project – “I will never forget this […]

Previews: Futura – “NEW HORIZONS” @ Library Street Collective

Coming up on June 18th, Library Street Collective in Detroit will be opening up a solo show by graffiti legend Futura. Entitled NEW HORIZONS, the exhibition will feature imagery that fans of the street pioneer have come to love – gyroscopes, nebulae, and other abstracted structures as well as some of his pointman characters. Also, in association with the showing, he will be unveiling […]

Highlights: Art16 (London)

Art16 returned to Olympia, London from 19–22 May for the fourth year of this contemporary art fair. More than 100 galleries were brought together from over 30 countries, along with not-for-profit exhibitors and commissioned-artist installations. With the founders of Art16 being the same team that launched Art Central Hong Kong, Art International Istanbul (postponed this year) and Sydney Contemporary, it was no surprise to sense a strong presence from Asian galleries. The high point and fresh discovery for AM was the stall by the Taiwanese gallery, […]

Streets: Seth Globepainter (China)

Back in March and April, Julien Malland aka Seth Globepainter spent another couple of weeks traveling and painting around the Fengjing and Shanghai area in China. After two trips in 2014 and 2015 (covered here and here), the Paris-based artist returned to create more work influenced by the local tradition, culture, social and economic situation, as well as the setting he was working in. Whether by choosing the color palette, working within a certain format or by creating an image that extends the found situation, the produced works show […]

Streets: Anders Gjennestad aka STRØK (Paris)

One month ahead of his upcoming solo show with Mathgoth Gallery, Anders Gjennestad aka STRØK visited Paris and painted his largest mural to date. After two days of work, THE Norwegian artist completed this 25 meters high piece that nicely presents his recognizable style. Depicting four break dancers in midst of their performance, this mural was like most his work – based on the photos the artist took himself. For this piece, he created realistic stencils from photographs, showing only the person and its shadow. Always playing […]

After a showing in Los Angeles a couple months ago (covered), Eric Yahnker is at it again – this time in New York. His show Steve Jobs’ Day Off will be closing it out at the end of this week at The Hole and as you can see from the title, once again highlights the LA-based artist’s humor and love for satire. The new body of work consists of eight new works on paper, along with sculpture and installation that reference pop culture, politics, and quirks of society as […]

Streets: Colin van der Sluijs (Chicago)

While in town for his show at Vertical Gallery, Colin van der Sluijs painted a large mural in Chicago’s south loop. The nine-story wall (1006 S Michigan Avenue) features a yellow-headed blackbird (now no longer in the area) & red-headed woodpecker (in need of conservation) amongst bursting foliage and is part of the Wabash Arts Corridor. The Dutch artist’s debut USA solo exhibition Luctor Et Emerge will be on view through May 28. Via Colossal. Discuss Colin van der Sluijs here.
