Gifted artist James Jean (interviewed) recently was recruited by Apple to promote their new Pencil stylus which pairs nicely with the newly released iPad Pro. Jean put the novel technology to good use by drawing his amazing imagery directly onto the tablet, which you can see in the images included here. Basel Week Miami ’15 / Openings: Tomoo Gokita – “Damage Control” @ Bill Brady Gallery

Fresh out of the gates for Basel Week Miami is a showing from Tomoo Gokita with acrylic and gouache on canvas paintings at Bill Brady Gallery’s new permanent space in the Little River District. The new body of work, titled Damage Control, took portraiture painting to another level with works based on vintage portraits of Hollywood divas, movie stills, found photos and postcards. Created with soft gradients, solid black, or even unpainted white space, the Japanese artist’s characters are mostly faceless, giving only subtle suggestions of their basic features. While mysterious and almost haunting […]

Streets: Jun Ong – “Star” // Urban Xchange (Malaysia)

After sharing with you the murals Sabek & DALeast painted for the Urban Xchange event in Malaysia, here is now a look at an artist that went in a completely different direction. The five story high lighting installation shaped like a star from architect Jun Ong is situated in an unfinished concrete building and required five hundred meters of steel cables and LED strips. The stunning geometric work lodged in the unused structure in Butterworth is inspired by the term “glitch,” or error in the system, which can […]

Basel Week Miami ’15: Os Gemeos // Tiroche Deleon Collection @ Mana Wynwood

Fans of the twins attending Basel Week Miami next week should add visiting the Tiroche Deleon Collection to their itinerary. Sem Titulo (Untitled) is a sculptural installation piece from Os Gemeos that features a giant head mounted on the chassis of a Volkswagen Beetle and brings to life something seen earlier in their Serenade painting. The complex work from the Brazilian street art duo was first seen in a series of Vertigem exhibitions (like at CCBB Brasilia) and now will be on view at Mana Wynwood along with other […]

POW! WOW! Taiwan ’15 / World Tour: Jeff Soto

After sharing with you the first leg of the POW! WOW! tour of Asia (see Japan), here is a glimpse at the second part which was held in Taiwan. Our coverage begins as we follow along with one of the participants, Jeff Soto (interviewed), as he shares an intimate look at his experiences there with a series of photographs. In this set of shots, you will see the American artist work on three murals for the event, some culinary delights, a few cultural sights, as well a […]

Showing: Matzu / Tomokazu Matsuyama – “Somewhere Here” @ Zidoun-Bossuyt Gallery

Last week in Luxembourg, Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) presented new works entitled Somewhere Here at Zidoun-Bossuyt Galley. The Japanese artist’s new solo included a series of vibrant new paintings as well as steel sculptures created in monochromatic gold and silver. The New York-based Matsuyama’s characters were both rendered against complex “deco-florative” patterns in irregularly shaped canvases set in striking contrast against the white walls as well as were seen in a more minimalistic outline in sculptural form both inside and outside the gallery space. Take a look at more installation photos below… Discuss Matzu here.

Streets: DALeast // Urban Xchange (Penang)

You may already seen the mural we shared with you yesterday painted by Sabek for Urban Xchange in Penang, so here is a followup on another artist who painted a piece for the event. The image of the phoenix can be seen soaring up on a wall near the Hin Bus Depot, created with bundles of kinetic wires, a technique that is signature to the work of DALeast (interviewed). What is interesting is the Chinese artist using a red palette this time, perhaps referencing how the the mythologic bird rises from the ashes. […]
