POW WOW ’13: Shark Toof & Angry Woebots

Another wall that was shared during POW WOW this year was the side of Fresh Cafe & Loft In Space, center of much of the activity surrounding the event. Getting up at this location were the LA-based artists Shark Toof and Angry Woebots with their signature characters (sharks and pandas) looking fierce. POW WOW ’13: Nychos x Jeff Soto Mural

After a relaxing week in Hawaii filled with art, great food, and friends we haven’t seen in awhile, it’s time to share with you photos of some more of the murals that went up for POW WOW 2013. One of the collaborative pieces that seemed to work well for this year’s event was from Nychos and Jeff Soto (interviewed). Streets: Jonathan Borofsky (Pittsburgh)

This whimsical sculpture from by artist Jonathan Borofsky is entitled Walking to the Sky, a stainless steel and resin piece depicting people walking up a 30 meter high pole. The american sculptor and printmaker who lives and works in Maine has had the piece installed in various places around the world, but now it resides permanently on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University near the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Morewood Avenue in Pittsburgh. POW WOW ’13: Dabs Myla x 123Klan x Slick x Askew x Roid

As this year’s POW WOW draws to a close this weekend, murals that artists have been working on all week are nearing completion. We’ll be bringing you a look at many of these pieces soon, starting first with an epic collaboration between Dabs Myla, 123Klan, Slick, Askew, and Roid. The long wall deep in the Kaka’ako district will add much needed color to the area, and highlights a seamless meshing of styles from these artists hailing from different parts of the world. Studio Visit: Melissa Haslam – “Floating Garden” @ LeBasse Projects

Returning to the botanical imagery that she has worked on in the past, painter Melissa Haslam (featured) will be opening a show at LeBasse Projects on March 2nd. Entitled Floating Garden, the new body of work will highlight how the Melbourne-based artist has furthered refined her form of portraiture. POW WOW ’13 (Part I)

With POW WOW 2013 in full swing, AM made the rounds yesterday to check out the progress as murals were going up all around the Kakaʻako district in Honolulu. Videos / Releases: JR – “Action in Kesennuma, Japan” Lithograph

Back in November, French photograffeur JR headed to Japan and toured the disaster area, furthering his Inside Out project in the area – dedicated to the victims of the tsunami.  If you remember, one of the most poignant images from that trip was the pasting of the eyes of a local fisherman on a boat that was stranded and abandoned as the water receded. Streets: Herakut – The Giant Storybook Project (Part II)
