Openings: Frank Stella – “Geometric Variations” @ Paul Kasmin

Earlier this past fall Paul Kasmin gallery hosted an exhibition featuring the works of contemporary art luminary Frank Stella. The solo show entitled Geometric Variations gave us a look at the colorful works and the iconic squares that helped define part of Stella’s reputation. Unfortunately, the showing has closed already but you can check out some of our photos after the jump…

Previews: Frank Stella – “Geometric Variations” @ Paul Kasmin Gallery

On Thursday, September 22nd, Paul Kasmin Gallery will be opening an exhibition of seminal works from influential American painter Frank Stella. Famously stating a painting is “a flat surface with paint on it – nothing more”, and with his geometrically composed, yet controversially titled 1959 painting Die Fahne Hoch! as an early example, he has long been considered a founding figure in the evolution of minimalism and post-painterly abstraction. Auctions – “Under the Influence” @ Phillips de Pury & Co. New York

This Tuesday, Phillips de Pury & Company will be holding their more-accessible Under the Influence contemporary auction in New York. Among the lots are pieces by many of our favorite artists, including Chiho Aoshima, Marcel Dzama, Phil Frost, and Barry McGee. One notable lot is Portrait 5, Stephen(s), 2009–2010, a collaborative work by Shepard Fairey, Andres Serrano and Frank Stella, which debuted on the December 8, 2010 episode of The Colbert Report as part of an interview with Steve Martin and is now being sold […]

What’s that saying… “so old, it’s new?” The Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol painted BMW Art Cars, a series starting in the 70’s, will be on display in the BP Grand Entrance and can be seen free of admission. A little late notice on our part though, as today is the final day […]

Lehman Brothers to sell art collection

We’ve all heard of the unfortunate events to hit the economy in recent months with major financial investment firms going bankrupt and many assets falling to zero. Apparently these major financial firms have been some of the biggest investors in the art world. Recently, Lehman asked a bankruptcy judge to approve a 20k payment to its art handlers in order to start showing their collection to potential buyers. Lehman needs sell off part of art collection to raise at least 8 million dollars. It seems that […]
