Joining the plethora of artists that have had art visible from the High Line in New York, Barbara Kruger unveiled a mural she designed earlier this year (and on view through March 2017). Joining an illustrious list of artists (see some of the others here) commissioned by The High Line to design a billboard, Raymond Pettibon chose to use his 2010 drawing No Title (Safe he called…). The scene at home plate features the American artist’s characteristic imagery and text which references characters known well to those in New York like The Notorious B.I.G, Jackie Robinson, and Robert Moses. Featured as our Art Focus artist back in May (here), Sao Paulo-based street artist Eduardo Kobra has traveled to New York City for a mural project. The two-level public art piece features his remix of the famous Alfred Eisenstaedt photograph from the V-J celebrations in Times Square marking the end of U.S. hostilities with Japan. After a series of inspiring murals with Jose Parla in Cuba as part of his ever-expanding Wrinkles Of The City project and a TED Talk on the one year anniversary of his wish to turn the world Inside Out, JR has returned to New York for a new large-scale mural. Set next to the popular pedestrian walkway, The High Line, the piece took several days to complete and will be testament to the French photograffeur’s skills in a high-traffic location. David Shrigley, who is currently putting on a retrospective at the Hayward Gallery in the UK, has also found time to design a new billboard next to the The High Line in New York. The piece which will remain in place through May 7th features self-reflective speech bubbles and is entitled How Are You Feeling? Streets: John Baldessari – “The First $100,000 I Ever Made” (New York)

This $100,000 bill recently showed up in New York, along the re-purposed train tracks known as The High Line. The First $100,000 I Ever Made is the work of famed American conceptual artist John Baldessari and is displayed prominently on a 25-foot-by-75-foot billboard (above 18th St). This example of art near or on the famed pedestrian walkway is the first we have seen since KAWS and FriendsWithYou. More photos by Bill Orcutt after the jump…

Openings: FriendsWithYou – “Rainbow City” @ High Line (New York)

Wednesday night saw the transport of FriendsWithYou’s massive installation Rainbow City (first seen in Miami) to New York to celebrate the opening of Section 2 of the High Line. The air-filled structures, some up to 40 feet high, from Sam and Tury, who make up the Miami based collective are sculptural representations of their colorful abstractions, 0f which some smaller versions were seen at The Hole last night (more on that later). Openings: Kaws – “Passing Through” Companion @ The Standard (NY)

Today, AM was on hand to catch the arrival of the mother of all Kaws Companions (so far). This Passing Through Companion was hauled over from the backyard of the Aldrich Contemporary Museum, where it was last exhibited and dropped off in the front yard of The Standard Hotel in New York.
