On November 3rd, Lawrence Alkin Gallery opened Shoplifting, a new solo show by felt sculpture artist Lucy Sparrow. Inspired by the artist’s time spent working in a supermarket, the show will include a new range of daily products recreated as hand-crafted felt items. Eighteen in Copenhagen, a new space by V1 Gallery, is currently showing 29 Flags, a solo exhibition/installation by Cali Thornhill DeWitt. The exhibition opened on October 13th and will stay on view until October 14th. DeWitt’s new body of work consists of 29 vintage Stars & Stripes with flock lettering reflecting on the infamous moments that marked the last few decades of American life. Currently showing at Monnaie de Paris, Not Afraid of Love is Maurizio Cattelan’s largest exhibition since his retrospective in New York five years ago (covered). Previews: Barry McGee // Sites Unseen @ Moscone Center Garage

Today, the 9th of October, public art by Barry McGee will be unveiled (3PM–6PM) at the Moscone Center Garage in downtown San Francisco’s Yerba Buena neighborhood. This will be an inaugural event for Sites Unseen, a nonprofit public art organization that joined with Ratio 3 gallery for this project. The installations by the world famous SF-based artist will feature multi-colored geo panels installed in several locations on the exterior of the Moscone Center Garage, along with hand painted signature characters. Showing: Swoon – “Thalassa” @ Detroit Institute of Arts

At the end of last month, Swoon (interviewed) unveiled the latest iteration of her Thalassa installation at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Fans of the her work can check out the suspended sculptural piece at the Woodward Avenue entrance through the end of May of next year. This display of Swoon’s work will round out nicely her contributions to the art scene of the Motor City to go along with her exhibition opening soon at Library Street Collective as well as a mural project in the Jefferson-Chalmers district. Setup: Swoon – “The Light After” @ Library Street Collective (Detroit)

Along with unveiling an installation at the Detroit Institute of Arts (covered) while in the Motor City, Swoon (interviewed) will also be opening a solo show at Library Street Collective on October 10th. The Light After will be an immersive exhibition covering approximately 2,500 square feet of gallery walls and ceilings with hundreds of hand-cut paper and Mylar elements. Openings: Allison Sommers & Ozabu – “Bruxism” & “彷徨 (Wander)” @ Thinkspace

A couple weekends ago, Allison Sommers (interviewed) & Ozabu opened their shows at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Bruxism in the main space was an immersive solo from Sommers featuring her increasingly abstracted meaty subject matter at times housed in various paraphernalia, completed by an installation that was like a record of how the new pieces were conceived and completed. In the project room, Ozabu presented nine new works collectively entitled 彷徨 (Wander), her debut solo with the gallery, with details that need to be seen in person to be appreciated. Streets: Ai Weiwei – “Reframe” @ Palazzo Strozzi (Florence)

Over the weekend, Ai Weiwei unveiled a provocative new installation on the facade of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence which continues his commentary on the current refugee crisis in Europe. Entitled Reframe, the Chinese artist’s latest public work will features 22 life rafts attached to the historic building’s windows, a striking critique of the handling of the humanitarian crisis.
