Streets: Titi Freak (Japan)

The Brazil-based Titi Freak (Hamilton Yokota) recently made a trip to the Ishinomaki, Miyagi in Japan for a project involving the painting of some temporary dwellings with people in the community. Made possible by The Japan Foundation and the Embassy of Brazil in Japan, the endeavor was meant to have an empowering effect for the residents and featured workshops for inhabitants, solo works by the graffiti artist, as well as collaboration murals. Last showing a striking, large scale painting at Art HK back in May, Japanese contemporary artist Masakatsu Sashie is this time participating in a group exhibition in his home country. Moon, which opened on the 28th, saw a slight departure from the artist’s signature orb paintings, or perhaps more accurately a return of sorts to the hybrid machine compositions more relevant to the his early work. On a rainy Tuesday night in the Shibuya district in Tokyo, Japan, Sunday Issue (gallery/lounge) hosted the opening of Rockin’ Jelly Bean and Sketch’s joint exhibition, The Monsters Showcase. Rockin’ Jelly Bean (who is also known for his illustrations/paintings of sexy women and merchandise through his store, Erostika) was spotted in his signature lucha mask and groupies in tow. One of our favorite artists, Audrey Kawasaki’s first solo show in Japan is opening this weekend at Space Yui Gallery in Tokyo. This Saturday, Joshua Liner will host the opening of “Love Monster,” Japanese-born Brooklyn-based artist Aiko’s first solo show with the gallery and her largest exhibition to date. AM was excited to have been in attendance for the 12th installment of Takashi Murakami’s self-represented artist art fair, Geisai, held in Tokyo, Sunday March 8. Last night marked the opening of Yoshitomo Nara’s solo show at Blum & Poe (previewed and teased). The show features a large scale sculptural installation, and a new series of paintings and drawings focusing on Nara’s signature pastel-hued girls. At the center of the exhibition was a prairie-style wagon installation by YNG, a collaboration between Yoshitomo Nara and Japanese design firm Graf. Ayako Rokkaku @ Scope Miami

Over at Basel Week Miami, there were hundreds if not thousands of artists that were represented at the various art fairs. Ayako Rokkaku was one that caught AM’s eye and we did a little more digging for you. Similar to another rising Japanese arist: Masakatsu Sashie (here), Ayako also got her start at Takashi Murakami’s Geisai art fair where she won Scout Prize at Geisai #4/#10Â and the prestigious Akio Goto Prize at Geisai #9. New York-based Japanese artist Aya Uekawa opens her latest show tonight at Chelsea’s Kravets Wehby, entitled It’s a Really Small World. What Uekawa can do with pattern and composition is truly amazing, making it no wonder that so many collectors are keeping a close eye on her career. The show is up until December 6, 2008.
