After invading space, finally living up to his full name, Space Invader has decided to explore another frontier – the underwater realm. With an assist from Jason deCaires Taylor, whose underwater sculptural coral reefs and photography was featured in a recent show in New York, the French street tilist has affixed his classic imagery on the side of one of the reefs in Cancun adding another exotic locale notch to his belt of conquest. Sculptor and photographer Jason deCaires Taylor recently made his premiere at Jonathan Levine Gallery with a solo exhibition entitled Human Nature. The British born artist who grew up with the coral reefs of Malaysia is known for taking his talents of altering environments to the ocean. Utilizing specialized PH neutral materials, Jason creates cement based sculptures and lays them in nature’s aquatic settings to create artificial reefs. Over the weekend, Rivera Gallery unveiled a truly impressive exhibit titled anthro(physis), a show which fused in very interesting ways a variety of artwork ranging from sculpture to paintings. At the core of the show, the theme connecting the artwork explored the issues of nature & environment and how art can re-interpret these issues in different ways.
