With the opening of this year’s Fame Festival just around the corner, another artist arrived to make his unique mark on the city of Grottaglie – JR! After getting past some initial obstacles, the French street photographer pasted up an image from his new series of works – “Unframed” and is the first piece pasted up by him that was not his photography. Another look after the jump…

As we mentioned last month, this year’s Nuart festival will be fast upon us. Along with a fantastic lineup including Vhils, Blu, ROA, Dolk, Ericailcane, Evol, Alexandros Vasmoulakis, Sten & Lex, M-City, and Dotmasters, it has now been announced that JR will be showing his “Women Are Heroes” film in conjuntion with the festival. German/Sierra Leonean reggae singer Patrice recently released a music video featuring an iconic speaker sculpture by JR (examples here and here). Utilzing some stop motion animation, “Ain’t Got No (I Got Life)”, a cover of a song by Nina Simone, features the wheatpasted set of speakers in different configurations throughout the video. Look for more from the French street photographer later this year in London, Shanghai, and Miami but for now, enjoy this video. Discuss JR here.
Our friend Sonja has been hard at work putting together her fantastic video recapping the tremendous showing of “Eurotrash” featuring the works of Conor Harrington (interviewed), Micallef (interviewed), JR and Vhils at the LAzarides 90210 pop up space in Beverly Hills. It also includes rad action footage of JR, Conor and Vhils building their outdoor murals. (covered here & here) Discuss this show here. Discuss Micallef, Conor Harrington, Vhils, JR.
For those of you who have been following out coverage of the Viva La Revolucion exhibition, we have for you a final roundup of the work put up around San Diego by the participating artists. We start you off with completed pics of Shepard Fairey’s (featured) Burmese Monk mural in South Park. The large mural was even more impressive when you consider that it was all painted/stenciled as opposed to the usual wheatpaste. More images of this piece and others after the jump as well […]
Saturday evening in San Diego was a great night for street, urban, and new contemporary art. With many of the museums in so-called cultural centers of this country and world still slow to embrace a rapidly growing movement, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego made it clear where they stand with an amazing exhibition of some of the major players in this art “Revolucion”. Not only did the city open up their public spaces to the artists (albeit still with some naysayers), they also […]
AM headed down to San Diego on Friday morning to catch the press preview of Viva La Revolucion at MCASD (check out our street coverage here). It was great to wander around the Jacobs Building and get a sneak peek of everything the artists have been working on indoors after seeing all the amazing pieces that have been popping up on the streets of the city. Pedro Alonzo, the exhibition’s curator, led a talk around the museum and spoke about the different artists and their work. Shepard Fairey, David Ellis, Stephan […]
Last night, AM stopped by the spacious Lazarides popup gallery in Beverly Hills to take in the four-person show of Vhils, JR, Conor Harrington (interviewed), and Micallef (interviewed). Dubbed “Eurotrash,” the impressive grouping had ample room to each bring a full body of work for all to enjoy. We’ll start our coverage off by focusing in on Vhils and JR, who also collaborated on some street pieces in the week leading up to the opening. Portugal-based artist Vhils reprised his popular chiseled walls by bringing them […]
As you know, AM has been looking forward to seeing four great artists (Vhils, JR, Conor Harrington (interviewed), Micallef (interviewed) get together for a show at the Lazarides space in Beverly Hills (320 North Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210). “Eurotrash” opens on Wednesday, but JR and Vhils have already completed some murals downtown LA (Spring Street between 6th and 7th) for their fans to enjoy. Of particular interest is the collaboration piece between the two artists where Vhils goes over a photographic wheatpaste piece […]
According to Lazarides, Vhils and JR have both taken time out from their busy schedule (Vhils – Fame Fest, JR – Cannes Festival & Germany) to travel to Los Angeles to prepare for their upcoming show. In fact, they are already on the streets around town working on some of the big-scale pieces they are famous for. The exhibition, entitled “Eurotrash”, will also feature two more great artists from the UK gallery’s stable of artists and – Conor Harrington (interviewed) and Micallef (interviewed). This will […]
