Basel Week Miami ’14: Untitled.

Focusing on emerging and midcareer contemporary art (over 200 exhibiting artists from 18 different countries), the Untitled. satellite fair was back for Basel Week Miami with their tent situated nicely on the beach. An intriguing show that recently ended in Detroit at the Library Street Collective featured new works from Kelsey Brookes. Collectively entitled Sleep: The Science and the Mystery, the new paintings from the former biochemist are constructed painstakingly with colorful patterns that in an abstract way define chemical and molecular structures. This particular set of mesmerizing works from the San Diego area based artist focused on Acetylcholine, Histamine, Norepinephrine and GABA, four neurotransmitters which help regulate sleep. Upcoming: Kelsey Brookes – “Sleep: The Science and the Mystery” @ Library Street Collective

On July 25th, Library Street Collective in Detroit will be hosting new works from Kelsey Brookes collectively entitled Sleep: The Science and the Mystery. Drawing on his past life as a biochemist, the San Diego based artist paints chemical and molecular structures with loosely defined abstract shapes and patterns. The resulting psychedelic swirls can put the viewer almost into a trance-like state if one stares at the work too long, mesmerized by the vortex of vibrant colors. Discuss this show here. Last week, Bay Area art fans saw the annual Art Market San Francisco come through town. The international art fair held at the Festival Pavilion – Fort Mason Center had galleries, artists, and collectors alike taking advantage of the one week of the year where art was in especially in focus in SF. The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt (New York)

Kicking off yesterday, the Fabergé Big Egg Hunt features egg sculptures customized by 260 artists, designers, photographers, architects and other creatives, some seen regularly here on AM. This event is a followup to the successful hunts held in London in 2012 and Dublin in 2013. We stopped by Kelsey Brookes‘ first solo exhibition recently in New York at Judith Charles Gallery. Entitled Better Living Through Chemistry, this show features a large body of work focusing in on his abstract paintings and musings via eye catching molecular structures. This style is also based on his scientific background and delves further into drugs and its effect on the human consciousness. Continuing with the themes he was exploring for a sold out show in San Diego last year, Kelsey Brookes will be presenting new work tomorrow night (November 21st) at the Judith Charles Gallery. His first solo in New York will feature abstract paintings and musings on molecular structures drawing from his scientific background, especially focusing in on drugs that affect the human consciousness. It turns out a piece from the amazing sold out show (covered) from Kelsey Brookes at Quint Contemporary last year went to the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (seen above in their recent acquisitions show). If you remember, the piece entitled Mescaline was part of his series of paintings inspired by the structures of psychedelics, no doubt drawing from personal experience as well as from his viewpoint as a former biochemist.
