On the 1st of February, Vroom &Varossieau Urban Contemporary Art in Amsterdam will be presenting the first Dutch show of the collaborative works by French artists L’Atlas and Tanc. After working side by side for more than 15 years, Substances will introduce the unique union of color and contrast, and the juxtaposition of Tanc’s expressive visual language against L’Atlas’ strict structures. Rewind: Jul 14 – Oct 25

This latest edition of our Rewind article is headlined by a trailer for a new short film by JR (interviewed) starring Robert De Niro. Entitled Ellis, the footage follows the Academy Award Winning actor as he stars as an immigrant whose pursuit of a new life expired at Ellis Island. Traversing an abandoned hospital complex, De Niro is confronted with ghostly archival photographs of immigrants and hospital patients taken over a century ago pasted up by the JR, part of the French artist’s Unframed series of works. […]

Recap: L’Atlas – “Transversal” @ Wunderkammern

Last month at Wunderkarmmern in Rome, L’Atlas unveiled a collection of new works entitled Transversal, featuring his signature maze-like aesthetic. The Paris-based street artist developed this unique style during an extended period of time in Morocco, Egypt and Syria where he studied with masters of all types of calligraphy. In the gallery setting, his work has since evolved to incorporate more geometric abstraction although his impeccable lifework is still present. While in town, he also created a mural for his fans. Openings: L’Atlas & Canto – “PARALLELS” @ Fabien Castanier Gallery

Over the weekend, the Fabien Castanier Gallery presented new works from L’Atlas & Canto collectively entitled PARALLELS. Aptly named, the exhibition not only refers the nationality of the two French artists, but the similarities in their aesthetic that both involve abstraction, precise patterning, and geometric tendencies. The series of paintings and installations they produced do pair nicely when viewed together and certainly show that the two have come far since their time on the streets. We were particularly impressed with the additional three-dimensional elements of Canto’s work and […]

Streets: World Roundup (Oct 15 – Oct 21)

With the return of our Streets World Roundup feature, we cover a lot of ground with the amount of worthy walls that have popped up since our last article. Leading things off is this surreal hot air balloon from Claudio Ethos in Istanbul, Turkey.  Other murals that caught our eye include work from ABOVE & JUST – Germany (source), RIPO – Spain (source), Gaia – Baltimore (source), Isaac Cordal – Austria, Faith47 – South Africa, Spidertag – The Alps (source), OLEK – UK, Etam Cru […]

Highlights: The Affordable Art Fair, London

The Affordable Art Fair was in London at Battersea Park last week, with no piece on display exceeding the cap of £4,000. We like the fair’s aim of making contemporary art accessible to everyone. Many others clearly appreciate the concept as well, since the AAF is now in its thirteenth year. It’s also become international: fairs were held in February in Milan and Brussels, and the next ones are scheduled for May in New York, Amsterdam and Bristol, with an affiliate event also taking place […]
