Highlights: London Art Fair 2018

The 30th anniversary edition of the London Art Fair opened to the public on Wednesday with 131 exhibitors participating. Traditionally focused on British Modern and Contemporary Art, the fair’s outlook is becoming increasingly global. AM understands that a quarter of the galleries this year are based outside the UK. This evolution is not too surprising and may be welcomed by many as a breath of fresh air. But it also results in a certain loss of identity or distinctiveness. And in today’s art fair environment, that’s […]

Showing: JR – “GIANTS” @ Lazarides

Today in London, Lazinc new flagship gallery in Mayfair opened their doors with an exhibition from JR (interviewed) entitled Giants. The show focuses in on the French artist’s series of large-scale outdoor installations that started back in 2016 for the Rio Olympics (covered). Visitors will be able to view the details of the photographer and street artist’s project (which also made an appearance at the US – Mexico border), including architectural plans, photography, and studies. Rounding out the exhibition is a sweet installation sticking out of the gallery’s […]

Showing: Kehinde Wiley – “In Search Of The Miraculous” @ Stephen Friedman Gallery

Currently in London, Kehinde Wiley has a powerful new show on view at the Stephen Friedman Gallery entitled In Search Of The Miraculous. Diverging a bit from his signature portraiture, the American artist has painted seascapes for his new body of work with references to the current migrant crisis and to the dark history of slavery. Continuing his practice of posing urban youths in place of the usual subjects in classic master paintings, Wiley has chosen to remix favorites from art history ranging from 17th-century Dutch nautical […]

Moniker ’17 / Previews: Kevin Peterson @ Thinkspace Gallery

Another artist showing with Thinkspace at the Moniker Art Fair (which opened today) in London was Kevin Peterson. Joining Brian Viveros (previewed), Audrey Kawasaki (previewed), Cinta Vidal, David Cooley, Dulk, and Telmo Miel with solo booths, the Houston-based artist contributed more of his signature paintings with children and their animal companions in urban environments, with a crown being the common denominator that draws this new body of work together. Discuss Kevin Peterson here.

Moniker ’17 / Previews: Audrey Kawasaki @ Thinkspace Gallery

Those attending the Moniker Art Fair (which opened today) in London, should head over to the multiple booths that Thinkspace is curating as they will be hosting solos from Brian Viveros (previewed), Cinta Vidal, David Cooley, Dulk, Kevin Peterson, Telmo Miel, and Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed), whose pieces for the event we will share with you here. The new paintings from the Los Angeles-based artist sees her exploring a new style that brings to mind old advertisements posters for circus performers (including some text), while still maintaining her skill […]

Frieze Week London ’17 / Previews: KAWS @ Perrotin Gallery

One booth you don’t want to miss while in London for Frieze Week will be the Perrotin booth as they have dedicated their entire space to KAWS. Continuing to push the boundaries of his aesthetic, the Brooklyn-based artist explores different palettes as well as incorporates more of his “scribbles” in the new work. Rounding out the showing is one of the American artist’s father and son companion sculptural duos as well as a larger piece in the Frieze Sculpture Park. Take a look at more preview […]

Previews: Yukimasa Ida – “Bespoke” @ Labassa Woolfe

On October 6th, Japanese artist Yukimasa Ida will be opening his first international solo show in collaboration with art dealer Justin Cook. Bespoke, his first major show outside of Asia, will be installed for a week at the Labassa Woolfe shop in London’s Fitzrovia and will include works exclusively painted for this exhibition. Coming from an artistic family, Ida started showing interest for painting at very young age and went to study oil painting and contemporary art at the Tokyo University of the Arts. After the […]

Previews: Brian Viveros – “Bulletproof” @ Moniker Art Fair

With the Moniker Art Fair set to be on view from October 5-8, we will now begin to take a look at what the event in London has to offer. The collection featuring his iconic rough and tumble women will include some notable firsts – a double portrait, featuring Dirtyland warriors side by side for the first time and a massive painting depicting a fuller body view, as opposed […]

Streets: Banksy – Basquiat Tribute Pieces (London)

With the imminent opening of the first large-scale exhibition in the UK of the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat scheduled for the 21st, a couple Banksy pieces have shown up near the venue overnight. On his Instagram account, Banksy noted the irony of the Barbican, “a place that is normally very keen to clean any graffiti from its walls”, hosting the work of the legendary graffiti artist. The main piece, what we like to call “SAMO Stop & Search” if you will, has been done with stencil spraypaint, freehand spraypaint and oil […]

Openings: Festival Iminente (London)

Festival Iminente (previewed) opened recently and will bring two days of art and music to London’s Brick Lane. The festival serves as both a celebration of Portuguese and pan-European culture and a warning of what may be lost as a result of the UK’s exit from the European Union. Vhil‘s cast concrete sculpture is based upon a sketch which he drew on a previous trip to the capital. The portrait is surrounded and interwoven with fragments of a city as viewed from above and the crevices created by the metropolis’ roads […]
