Showing: Kenny Scharf – “Pop Renaissance” @ Honor Fraser

We recently stopped by Honor Fraser in Los Angeles to take in the current showing from Kenny Scharf (interviewed) entitled Pop Renaissance. Split into separate rooms, the two body of works exhibited are well demarcated by both content and space. One room features some newer works inspired by Scharf’s love for the Flintstones while the other section hosted work from when he covered the ceiling of the Palazzo Communale in Italy over a decade ago (the silkscreened canvases were then painted over with his iconic characters at […]

Daido Moriyama @ PRISM (Los Angeles)

Over the weekend, AM had the opportunity to check out the Daido Moriyama exhibition that just closed at PRISM in Los Angeles. The collection of photographs from the renowned Japanese photographer are examples of his typical black and white images that have been lauded as being influential in how the world viewed the cultural transition of life in Japan after World War II. Take a look at more snaps below… Discuss Daido Moriyama here.

Openings: Eric Joyner – “First World Problems” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Over the weekend, painter and donut aficionado Eric Joyner (interviewed) opened his solo show at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles. First World Problems introduces new paintings featuring his signature retro robots and their fried dessert companions in Joyner’s continuing survey of this strange world. Returning his mechanical friends to the urban setting made for interesting opportunities to depict his unique version of city life. On Saturday night, Luke Chueh’s (featured) opened his latest solo show, Random Acts Of Sadness, at CHG Circa. Tomorrow night at CHG Circa, fans can attend the opening of Luke Chueh’s (featured) newest show in Culver City. Featuring mostly new works from the Los Angeles-based painter, Random Acts Of Sadness will include pieces that place his cast of animal characters in unfortunate situations (including more from his You Are What You Eat series – see tiger & bear), rendered in his signature style. Oftentimes, the true meaning of the paintings will more clearly reveal themselves when examining the titles as Chueh has a penchant for clever wordplay, […]

Preview: Eric Joyner – “First World Problems” @ Corey Helford Gallery

This Saturday night (August 10th), Eric Joyner (interviewed) will be opening a new solo show at Corey Helford Gallery. Bringing his robots into the city, where his other favorite subject (donuts) are in much abundance will make for excellent material for his special form of portraiture. Utilizing a meme, First World Problems, as the title, the new work will no doubt add an extra layer of meaning when robot society is involved. Check out some more preview images below… Discuss Eric Joyner here.

Surveying seeks to capture the shifting energy and […]

Preview: Sean Mahan – “Invisible Threads” @ Thinkspace

Coming up this Saturday, August 10th, the Thinkspace Gallery will be opening a show from Sean Mahan in their project room. Entitled Invisible Threads, the new acrylic and graphite works on panel is typical of the Florida-based artist’s work projecting innocence and nostalgia. Tying things in thematically for this exhibition are a series of portraits of children and their sewing machines, which is alluded to in the title of the show. Check our more preview images below…
