ALAC ’11: Andrew Schoultz @ Jerome Zodo Contemporary

Of all the booths we saw at Art Los Angeles Contemporary ’11, the one that stood out the most was Jermone Zodo Contemporary’s, which had a solo show by the prolific and outstanding Andrew Schoultz.  The show was anchored by a mixed-media piece, Monument to a Whirlwind (pictured above), that measured an impressive 11 ft. by 20 ft. (it was the largest piece on paper at the entire fair).  We are happy to report that the monumental work was purchased by a museum in the […]

Openings: Art Los Angeles Contemporary ’11

This past weekend, the second annual Art Los Angeles Contemporary took place at its newest location, The Barker Hanger.  LA’s best contemporary art fair featured work by established artists such as Barry McGee, Dan Attoe, Richard Jackson, Shepard Fairey and Ryan McGinness, as well as tons of emerging ones.  Participating were galleries from all over the world, including California, New York, Europe, and Asia. A major improvement this year was the easy to navigate floor space compared to the spread out and confusing maze of […]

Openings: Nathan Mabry – “Armature” @ Cherry and Martin

Currently on view at Culver City’s always exciting gallery Cherry and Martin is Nathan Mabry’s Armature. The exhibition features five new sculptures and a sculptural fountain. The aluminum, bronze, and steel works are wonderfully odd, humorous, engaging, and both familiar and unexpected.  The artwork references such artists as Picasso and other modernists while at the same time influenced by African and Native American art. It’s a fantastic show and you should see it before it closes on Feb. 12. See more images after the jump…

Streets: Downtown LA Graffiti Mural Mini Tour

This past weekend, AM (along with our good friend Jasper Wong) was lucky enough to go on a mini tour of the murals in downtown Los Angeles, hosted by one of LA’s finest photographers – Estevan Oriol (after he gave us a tour of his spectacular studio that he shares with Mister Cartoon…more on that later). The piece that you see above is by Mister Cartoon and Toomer.  It is one of LA’s most famous murals and has been the background for countless photographs and […]

Streets: SABER and Shepard Fairey Flags Collaboration

On LA’s famous Melrose Ave, near Fairfax Ave lies a collaboration by two of the city’s most pioneering street and graffiti artists. On a wall that previously held a Shepard Fairey mural now features two flags side-by-side, one an American flag as interpreted by Fairey and the other, an American flag as seen through the eyes of SABER. Street pieces do not get better than this. These two local heroes have provided the streets of Los Angeles and the rest of the world with innovative, […]

Eli Broad to Build Museum in Downtown LA

Eli Broad, who is arguably known as the most powerful man in Los Angeles, revealed this week where he will build his museum, which will house the spectacular Broad Collection. The highly-anticipated location was speculated for years to be decided between Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Downtown Los Angeles. In the end, Downtown LA wins out and will be the site where Broad’s world-class contemporary art collection will reside. It will be situated right by Disney Hall and will be in close proximity to The […]

Openings: Antony Micallef & Conor Harrington @ Lazarides (Beverly Hills)

Two artists from across the pond who are not strangers to Los Angeles – Conor Harrington (interviewed), who had a show with Chloe Early at Kinsey/DesForges last year, and Antony Micallef (interviewed), who had a pop-up show with Lazarides almost 3 years ago – unveiled their newest body of work to a thrilled opening night crowd at Eurotrash at the Lazarides LA gallery. Of the four artists (also including Vhils & JR), who participated in the group exhibition, Micallef’s work stood out the most. Unlike […]

Preview: Andy Warhol – “Black & White” @ Prism

Continuing with their run of strong exhibitions featuring internationally-recognized artists, Prism brings one of the most famous artists of the 20th century to Hollywood. Opening this week is a show with works by Andy Warhol, concentrating on his late career black & white silk-screened paintings. Often overlooked in a career full of influential and iconic work, the late-’80s pieces feature sources Warhol has collected since the 1950s, including advertisements, maps, diagrams, and illustrations from magazines and newspapers. The polished and glossy images are brought down […]
