Preview / Set-Up: Cyrcle. – “Organized Chaos!” (Los Angeles)

This past weekend, AM had a chance to visit L.A.-based art collective Cyrcle. as they prepare to unveil their second solo show, which takes place this Friday in the city of Los Angeles. Titled Organized Chaos!, this new body of work shows a continuing evolution of both their style and aesthetic so people who have been following their work will be pleasantly surprised when they see what the group have been up to as of late. Using the cube as the central idea behind the show, as […]

Openings: Nathan Ota – “Pop! Goes the Weasel” @ La Luz de Jesus

Earlier this month, AM paid a visit to La Luz de Jesus to check out the opening of Pop! Goes the Weasel, Nathan Ota’s new show in Los Angeles. The well attended event featured whimsical paintings from the LA-based artist full of imagery that appear often in his work such as birds, tree creatures, vibrant colors, and lettering proclaiming his graffiti roots. Stop by before the exhibition closes on December 2nd if you want to see it in person. Discuss Nathan Ota here.

Streets: Mear One (Los Angeles)

Another day, another impressive mural from Mear One (interviewed). This latest wall is located in Culver City and features some of the apocalyptical-illuminati imagery that is often seen in his work as well as puts the LA-based street artist’s top-notch technical skills on display. This piece was part of series of works in support for Prop 37 leading up to the election and the fight for labeling of genetically modified foods (see video below for more info). Showing: Know Hope – “The Weight” @ Known Gallery

Last week, the Known Gallery in Los Angeles welcomed the Israel-based Know Hope in to display new works as well as create an installation for their showspace. Entitled The Weight, the new paintings and sculptural compositions touched on the subject of the burdens we have and how we manage them. Along with glimpses of his spindly characters, the poetic musings seen in his street work also made the trip over on minimalistic pieces on the side of the gallery. Take a look in the photos below… Discuss Know Hope here.

Streets: Mike Stilkey (Los Angeles)

Mike Stilkey sent us some flicks of a recent mural he painted in Los Angeles. The 13 x 14 foot mural was painted outside of a photography studio in La Brea. We like how this furry guy brightens up his new home, and how his camera nods towards what’s inside the premises. Stilkey’s murals never fail to disappoint! Discuss Mike Stilkey here.

Openings: JonOne – “A Beautiful Madness” @ Fabien Castanier Gallery

Earlier this month, the Fabien Castanier Gallery presented the first solo exhibition in the United States from JonOne entitled A Beautiful Madness. Although raised in New York where he laid his graffiti roots in Harlem, JonOne has lived in Paris since the mid 1980s where he has established himself as a fine artist. His imagery, as seen in this new work, is characterized by an abstract and energetic form of expression leading to compositions full of freestyle strokes, movement, and color. The exhibition runs through December 2nd, so […]

Openings: Kevin Peterson – “Amended” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last week at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City, Kevin Peterson filled the main space (also see Jacub Gagnon’s work in the project room) with his new show entitled Amended. The paintings he chose to put on display featured his signature form of portraiture with children and animals juxtaposed with backgrounds full of graffiti and urban scenery (some of which had a retro feel to them). Rounding out the show was a sculptural piece based on a defaced playground spring toy that was mirrored with an accompanying painting. […]

Entitled The Weight, the new body of work from the Israeli street artist explores various interpretations of what weighs down on us, how we got to being there, and how we manage the burdens that we bear through a series of paintings and installations. You can expect some of the imagery that has been a constant for him and his work like his spindly […]
