Bumblebee’s street work oftentimes deals with serious issues, such as youth homelessness and environmental awareness. His most recent mural though, a 8’x40′ piece located on the corner of Melrose and Spaulding in Hollywood, CA, is of a more whimsical and personal sort. This Saturday night (March 30th), the Thinkspace Gallery will hold a one night only (5-9 pm) event raise awareness & funding for the purpose & progression of the Oceanic Awareness Collaboration, which provides underprivileged kids with scholarships to attend CIMI Marine Biology Camp on Catalina Island. Previews: Marion Peck – “Animals” @ Michael Kohn Projects

On March 30th, Michael Kohn Gallery will inaugurate their new project space (dubbed Michael Kohn Projects) at 7270 Beverly Blvd with a solo showing from Marion Peck. The LA-based pop surrealist painter, wife of Mark Ryden, has eleven new works to share collectively entitled Animals, placing her creatures in “various situations and often anthropomorphized to reflect human emotion and mental states.” Here are couple preview images to tide you over until Saturday night. On March 22, Milk Studios in Hollywood was the site of the VIP opening preview of Charming Baker’s solo exhibition Lie Down I Think I Love You. The artist’s largest show to date explored the unpredictable nature of love through 20 paintings, as well an over-sized sculptural installation of a plastic toy passenger plane, prints, and other sculptures. Currently showing at Thinkspace are paintings from Linnea Strid, part of a joint show entitled A Quiet Place with Stephanie Buer (see her works here). On display from Strid were her signature portraiture seen through her playful use of water as well as newer works that capture her characters in a moment of solitude or inner reflection. AM stopped by New Image Art yesterday to take in a new set of paintings from the the Brooklyn-based Paul Wackers. Early Romantics put on display Wacker’s modern take on still life painting with the inclusion of geometric and abstract elements added to the mix. Earlier tonight, AM dropped by L.A.C.E. Gallery in Hollywood to take in a solo exhibition entitled Thin Veils And Heavy Anchors from stencil specialist Logan Hicks. The new body of work filled the expansive showspace with two series of works – beautifully layered cityscapes & urban settings and novel new portraiture set against the backdrop of deconstructed architectural structures. LACMA Moves To Take Over MOCA

Back in 2008 when the MOCA was bailed out by Eli Broad to the tune of $30 million, there was hope this would stabilize the financial status of the museum. However, recent controversy over the direction of the Los Angeles institution under the leadership of Jeffrey Deitch as well as continued monetary issues have finally led to a formal proposal for a takeover by LACMA (which surprisingly came at the request of the MOCA board).
