Fascinated by the play of light within the nighttime landscape ever since he was a young boy, Stephen Fox has taken that interest and translated it into a career of painting. Basel Week HK’18 / Openings: James Jarvis – “The Waste Man” @ Aishonanzuka Gallery

On display through April 28th in Hong Kong at Aishonanzuka Gallery, The Waste Man is the latest exhibition from James Jarvis (interviewed). Known for his commercial work as a designer as well as a fine artist, his comics-style imagery (often humorous) is influenced by “philosophy, alternate realities, minimalism and skateboarding.” The show mainly consists of drawings of his signature character, something the British works on quite frequently, as well as a few larger gestural pieces on canvas. On Saturday night (April 21st) in Rome, Marion Peck will be unveiling her newest body of work entitled StraVolti at Dorothy Circus. Influenced by Picasso and Cubism, the Pacific Northwest-based artist has created a new series of surreal portraits that redefines the definition of beauty. Currently in the gallery’s London location, Peck also has a show on view featuring some of her older works and drawings. Earlier this week, Christie’s in Hong Kong put on display a selling exhibition from Michael Lau entitled COLLECT THEM ALL! Featuring the Chinese artist’s figurative work, whether that be in a painting or whether that be in sculptural form, they all feature the signature aesthetic that has come to be associated with what many consider to be the pioneer in popularizing the art toy or vinyl figure. On April 7th (6-10pm), Tim Biskup (featured) will be opening his SPRING COLLECTION show at FACE GUTS. Held at the Los Angeles-based artist’s gallery, workshop, and project space (4136 1/2 Verdugo Road), the exhibition will feature new paintings, tote bags, sweatshirts, handmade risograph zines, among other things.
