On May 20th, Mark Ryden (interviewed) will be opening a solo show in New York featuring artwork from the ballet (covered) he worked on with the American Ballet Theater. Entitled The Art Of Whipped Cream, the exhibition at Paul Kasmin Gallery will feature drawings, sketches and paintings made during the production of Whipped Cream. The opening will coincide nicely with the New York debut of the ballet at the Metropolitan Opera House on May 22nd where the giant of the Lowbrow Art Movement designed the backdrops, props and costumes. On April 22nd, Haroshi (featured) will be opening a solo show at Nanzuka in Tokyo entitled Guzo. For his first exhibition with the gallery in Shibuya, the locally-based artist has created 20 of his distinctive sculptures made from “salvaged” skate decks. The Japanese artist has long immersed himself in skate culture and has worked with brands like HUF and the skatepark The Berrics. After the his recent self-sponsored billboard went up near his studio in the Little Osaka area in Los Angeles, James Jean (interviewed) has announced a print release of the image. Udon II will be a time-limited edition starting 8:00 AM PDT on Monday, April 10 and ending at 7:59 AM PDT on Tuesday, April 11. A couple weeks ago in Manila at Secret Fresh Gallery, Luke Chueh (interviewed) successfully opened his first solo show in the Philippines. Just last weekend in San Francisco, Hashimoto Contemporary closed a solo show from Erin M. Riley (interviewed) entitled Simple. The new weavings continue the Brooklyn-based artist’s provocative work pushing the boundaries of the medium with non-traditional imagery. Nude selfies, car wrecks, evidence of domestic violence – no subject matter is too taboo for Riley as she takes her tapestries to the next level rendering imagery that most observers wouldn’t even think are possible with medium of choice.
