Openings: Travis Louie – “Curious Pets” @ Merry Karnowsky

Just over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky in Los Angeles unveiled a series of portraits from Travis Louie (interviewed) painted in his signature style and amazing detail to reproduce the look of vintage B&W photographs. Continuing to expand his narrative of pets and their owners, Curious Pets featured unlikely pairings and imaginative creatures all with their own backstories written out by the NY-based artist. Art Focus: Kelly Falzone Inouye

Our Art Focus this week is on San Francisco-based artist Kelly Falzone Inouye and her Sitcom Series. The entertaining set of watercolors evokes some nostalgic memories for us old enough to remember some of these television shows back in the day. The series is in line with the philosophy behind her artwork which is to “document some of the more obscure aspects of popular culture, playing with the idea of collective memory through appropriation and manipulation of familiar imagery.” More paintings after the jump…

Videos / Preview: Mars-1 – “Everything Under The Sun” @ Fecal Face Dot Gallery

Tonight in San Francisco, Mars-1′s (featured) will be taking over the temporary Fecal Face Dot Gallery’s space (248 Clement St. @4th Ave) with a new collection of organic paintings as well as a installation of his intriguing sculptural work collectively entitled Everything Under The Sun. As you can see from the video above by Colin Day, some of the pieces are quite large and stepping into the gallery tonight will be like entering another dimension filled with alien worlds and life. Events: James Jarvis Book Release @ The Standard Shop NYC

Tonight, at The Standard Shop, NYC, acclaimed British illustrator James Jarvis will unveil his first new narrative in five years, De Profundis, with a public signing event from 6-8pm. Accompanying the book’s release, The Standard Shop has organized an exhibition of Jarvis’ work – including original works for sale – complete with an original site-specific piece on the Shop’s windows from November 10th through December 8th.

Previews: Femke Hiemstra – “The Timid Cabbage” @ Roq La Rue

Tomorrow night, November 11th, Seattle’s Roq La Rue plays host to a new exhibition from Dutch painter Femke Hiemstra. She just showed in LA in July in a three-person show and this time will be showing alongside Ryan Heshka (just like in 2010) with a series of 11 drawings based on the poem The Timid Cabbage by Charles Krafft. Each drawing goes with a stanza, and that stanza is written on the surrounding mat by Femke. More preview images after the jump…

Preview: Marco Mazzoni – “Xtsy” @ Gallery B15

Tonight (November 10th) in Copenhagen, Marco Mazzoni will be introducing a whole new body of work entitled Xtsy at Gallery B15. Showing his proficiency with colored pencils, the Italian artist has continued to explore his form of faceless portraiture with a series of vibrant works that feature a melding of human and natural world.
