Previews: Tim Biskup – “Space Madness” @ Kong Art Space

For his first time in Hong Kong, Tim Biskup (featured) will be opening a show on August 27th at the Kong Art Space entitled Space Madness. The title of the exhibition references one of the Los Angeles-based artist’s first influences for his cartoon-like imagery – Ren & Stimpy, an animated TV show. Another inspiration of his, the work of Roberto Matta, was also listed as a touchpoint for the new vibrant and colorful pieces. Discuss Tim Biskup here.

Upcoming: Brendan Monroe – “Morphology” @ Heath Ceramics (San Francisco)

After a fantastic showing at Heath Ceramics in Los Angeles last year (covered), Brendan Monroe (interviewed) will be next putting new works on display soon at their San Francisco location. Morphology in the Boiler Room will continue the locally-based artist’s collaboration with the manufacturer of artisan pottery, a perfect way for Monroe to bring to life in a new way his organic and science-based imagery. Roq La Rue upped the ante for the fifth edition of their Lush Life group show, titled Reverie. With both the main floor and upstairs project room utilized, and the debut of the large installation piece by Cheyenne Randall, the gallery was literally packed to the rafters. Releases: Travis Louie – “Mr. Stephenson And The Bug” Print

Fans of Travis Louie’s (interviewed) fantastical painted faux vintage photographs will be glad to hear that Pressure Printing has just released a new print entitled Mr. Stephenson And The Bug. We stopped Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles earlier this week to see the solo from Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) who had a wonderful series of drawings on display made from ballpoint pen, markers, pens, color pencils and graphite. Perhaps it’s the translucent paper used for these new pieces, but the translucent and ethereal look draws the viewer in for a second look to try and decipher how the Los Angeles-based artist achieves the effect. Currently at BC Gallery in Berlin, Axel Void has a series of provocative works on display entitled Sehnsucht. The solo show from the Miami-based artist consists mainly of small and large paintings featuring portraits of people with plastic wrapped around their heads as well as some videos (sample here). Earlier this week, AM stopped by the studio of Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) to see what he has been up to and what he has planned for the future. Along with picking up some of the whimsical Pothead plant holders he is producing through Sunny Side Up Studio, we also enjoyed seeing some of the new paintings he has been working on – many sunsets and polka dots in a beautiful new color palette. Hayao Miyazaki Un-retires

Fans around the world were delighted to hear last month that Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki will be working on a ten minute short that will screen exclusively at the Studio Ghibli museum in Japan. His son Goro Miyazaki revealed that his father is bored maintaining the museum and wants to keep busy working on a new three year project that will feature a 3D animation about a caterpillar named Boro. Provocative painter Cleon Peterson has worked with the Library Street Collective before like during last year’s Art Basel Week in Miami (covered). Their new collaborative effort, a show entitled Poison, will be opening on August 29 at the LSC gallery space in Detroit and will no doubt feature more powerful and barbaric imagery from the former assistant to Shepard Fairey, drawing from his experiences and dark past.
