On December 13th, Soey Milk will be presenting a new body of work at the Corey Helford Gallery featuring oil on canvas as well as pencil and watercolor on paper works. Entitled SINAVRO, which is a pure Korean word translated loosely to mean “to progress slowly, almost imperceptibly,” the name of the show nicely describes the growth of the young artist’s imagery and technique. Openings: Ron English – “Evolutionary Alternatives” @ Tribeca Grand Hotel

Prior to traveling down to Basel Week Miami, Ron English (featured) unveiled a unique installation at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. Entitled Evolutionary Alternatives, this showcase curated by Natalie Kates Projects focused on Ron’s camouflage animal motif and brought it to life in the main concourse of the hotel with life sized sculptures of the deers painted to blend in with the foliage in the lobby. It was a great take on nature’s evolutionary defense mechanism cross pollinated with visual design. A special Dinogrenade edition was also released at the event […]

Previews: Lola – “The Younger” @ 80 Forty Gallery

This Saturday night (December 13th) in Los Angeles at 80 Forty Gallery, Lola will be opening the first solo we have seen from her since 2012 (covered). Basel Week Miami ’14: Aqua

Another fair we visited while in Miami was the tenth edition of Aqua. Featuring emerging and mid-career artists, the unique setting was a classic South Beach hotel that opened its rooms to collectors and exhibitors for the duration of Basel Week Miami. One of the pleasant surprises we stumbled upon was the piece seen above from Travis Louie (interviewed) that sees him using color for the first time in his signature series of works (exhibited by William Baczek). See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Discuss […]

Releases: Jim Houser – “Fusillade” Print

Philadelphia-based artist Jim Houser recently released a new print through Contemporanea in Spain entitled Fusillade. The name of the five color screen print is certainly appropriate as it features a cloud of arrows (some hand painted) that is often seen in Houser’s pieces as well as his installations. Measuring 16 x 16″ with a 1″ border, it comes in an edition of 50 (10 APs) and available here for those interested. Discuss Jim Houser here.

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Streets: Shepard Fairey x Cleon Peterson

Every year during Basel Week Miami, AM always spends some time in the Wynwood district checking out the activity as street and graffiti artists put in the time to beautify the area. For 2014, the predominant facilitators in the area, Wynwood Walls, decided to focus on The Art of Collaboration. One of the standouts was this joint effort painting four sides of a building by Los Angeles-based artists and coworkers Shepard Fairey (featured) and Cleon Peterson. Take a look at how their imagery melded perfectly together in […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: SCOPE

One of the favorite fairs we visited during Basel Week Miami was SCOPE and its high concentration of art from the Low Brow, New Contemporary, and Street Art movements. Featured at the fair were pieces from the Dean Collection (from collector Swizz Beatz), a new sculptural piece (based on recent print) from Cleon Peterson in the entryway, an installation from Swoon, a Juxtapoz stand, and Heineken House live painting. Here are some photos to give you a taste of what was seen at the fair including this amazingly […]

Several weeks ago, CHG Circa in Los Angeles hosted the opening of Nate Frizzell’s (interviewed) new show. entitled Dark Was The Night, the new paintings featured his imagery set against a stark black background, somehow making his characters and renderings seem more vivid. Seen were the children that frequently inhabit his visual language as well as the interplay between their use of animal costumes and the actual wild creatures that roam his world. Some more photos below but head over for a look yourself before it closes on December 6th. Photos via […]
