Mario Martinez aka Mars-1 (featured) recently opened a solo at Martha Otero Gallery entitled Toward A Distant Dawn. The new body of work includes much of the creative output that we have seen from the Bay Area-based artist of late including monochromatic works, his colorful otherworldly paintings, and sculptural representations of his symmetric and geometric visions. Earlier this month, Lori Earley (interviewed) opened up a new solo that had been a long time coming at Opera Gallery’s New York location. Releases: Joe Ledbetter – “Fire-Cat” Figure

Those who have been in the vinyl art toy game for a while will no doubt remember Joe Ledbetter’s original Fire-Cat figure, one of his iconic characters. The Los Angeles-based artist has now decided to release an updated version of the toy – producing, funding and designing this project himself. Billed as his first independent vinyl toy, the edition will be limited to 400, stand almost 11 inches tall (one of his largest figures to date), and cost $99. Openings: Kazuki Takamatsu – “Spiral of Emotions” @ CHG Circa

Over the weekend, art fans in Los Angeles saw the return of Kazuki Takamatsu and his gradient map textured portaiture in a new show entitled Spiral of Emotions. Exhibiting at CHG Circa (see 2013 at the sister gallery), the Japanese artist brought with him a new set of glowing paintings featuring ghostly silhouettes of children and adolescents, often intermingled with symbols of death and violence. Next month in San Francisco, Jim Houser will be opening his new show entitled Night Got Quiet – Not Quite Light at the Fecal Face Dot Gallery. The Philadelphia-based artist has prepared 15 mixed media paintings as well as his always intriguing site-specific installations. Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles recently closed out a show from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) entitled House of Daydreamers. The exhibition highlighted the locally-based artist’s diverse range of works including paintings, installations, and wood sculptures. The title of the show summarizes nicely some of the dreamy imagery that we have come to love from him, along with more literal interpretations.
