Previews: Jolene Lai – “Play” @ Thinkspace Gallery

On Saturday night, April 26th, Jolene Lai will be presenting five new works in Thinkspace Gallery’s project room (an encore to her showing there in 2013). Entitled Play, the new collection of paintings demonstrate the Los Angeles-based artist’s unique world, filled with whimsical and adventurous scenes seemingly taken directly from a fairytale or surreal dream. Openings: “SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot” @ Oakland Museum of California

Last weekend, the Oakland Museum of California opened a new exhibition, entitled SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the art and culture magazine Giant Robot. Along with a diverse selection of GR branded paraphenalia and publications, artists who have been involved with them over the years contributed original artwork as well as some wall murals. Releases: Luke Chueh – “Bitch” Figure

After introducing his collaboration with Pretty In Plastic at his last show (covered) in Los Angeles, Luke Chueh (featured) has revealed another image of his new art toy – Bitch. Like the Jack sculpture seen in that exhibition, this latest figure is based on a sculpt from Pretty In Plastic, and in this instance will be produced by Munky King. Over the weekend, an exhibition to benefit CAMP2E opened at the Soze Gallery entitled Steer Ahead. Artists like Dave Kinsey (seen above), Victor Castillo, Cyrcle., Devngosha, James Haunt, Brittany Segal, Dan Quintana, Bon Nielsen, Gregory Siff, Aaron De La Cruz, Paige Smith, Kristin Bauer, RETNA, Sarah Sandin, Aaron De la Cruz, Bone Thrower, Cole Sternberg, and Fidia Falaschetti were asked to customize and paint real steer skulls and display it along with original artwork. Art Focus: Fabio Magalhaes

This week’s Art Focus sees us taking a look at the unsettling work of Fabio Magalhaes. The young artist hails from Brazil, where he is based in the city of Salvador, also where he studied at the Federal University of Bahia. Working primarily in oils, Magalhaes paints as though he was a serial killer, with images of torture and body parts, and certainly it would be concerning if he used true photo references. Mike Giant x Major Lazer / Pharrell – “Aerosol Can” Music Video

Mazer Lazer recently unveiled their latest music video Aerosol Can featuring Pharrell and the artistic stylings of Mike Giant. In the footage, you can see the heavily tattooed (last covered by us in 2012) Bay Area artist showing off his calligraphy skills as he writes out the song lyrics, augmented by graphics. Contests / Releases: Brian Viveros Prints

Tomorrow morning (April 18th) at 10 am PST, Brian Viveros (featured) will be releasing two prints through Static Medium. Mark Dean Veca – “Le Poppy Den” @ David B. Smith Gallery

Last month, the David B. Smith Gallery gave Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) the go ahead to create a site specific installation in one of the rooms of their Denver showspace. Much like his showing last year at the Orange County Musuem of Art (covered), the LA-based artist created a space, dubbed Le Poppy Den this time, where attendees could be fully immersed in his signature “Toile de Jouy” like patterns.
