Previews: Bruce Yan – “Brand New” @ G1988 (East)

Tomorrow night (February 1st) at Gallery 1988 (East), designer and illustrator Bruce Yan will be presenting new works featuring his pieces exploring pop culture. Often using clever juxtaposition of silhouettes and iconic imagery that we all are familiar with including films from Hayao Miyazaki, the Seattle-based artist is able to get us to look at things in a new light.   Take a look at more preview images below… Discuss this show here.

Upcoming: Tim Biskup – “Kobe Prelude Experience” @ Nike Vault

Last month, we covered the start of The Kobe Prelude Experience put on by the Nike Vault at the STAPLES Center. Since those first pieces were revealed by Allison Torneros & Kris Kuksi, other artists have created work inspired by key moments in Kobe Bryant’s career. Tomorrow night (January 31st, 6 pm) is Tim Biskup (seen above) turn as he will be on hand (along with and and Alberto Mielgo) to discuss what they each came up with. Discuss Tim Biskup here.

Upcoming: Victor Castillo – “Pure Pleasure” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

This Saturday, February 1st, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles will be opening a new show from Victor Castillo. In a departure from his usual vivid and colorful paintings, the new body of work will consist of 12 black-and-white paintings on paper as well as a large-scale mural installation. Despite elements of his imagery still in place like the sausage nose characters, the dark social commentary appears to have toned down a bit. Discuss Victor Castillo here.

Showing: Chen Fei – “Flesh and Me” @ Galerie Perrotin (Hong Kong)

Currently in Hong Kong, the local branch of Galerie Perrotin has an exhibition on display from Chen Fei entitled Flesh and Me. Despite the Chinese artist’s original training in film, he chose to depict his artistic visions on canvas. Because of this background, his works often have a cinematic reference and feel to them and often features the sex, desire and violence often seen in that genre. Upcoming: “Cat Art Show” @ 101/Exhibit

On Saturday, January 25th, the newly located 101/Exhibit will be opening a Cat Art Show in Los Angeles with a portion of the proceeds will benefit Stray Cat Alliance. The roster features an interesting mix of  artists including Antony Micallef, Clayton Brothers, FAILE, Gary Baseman, Jonathan Yeo, Justin Bower, Kevin E. Taylor, Luke Chueh, Barry McGee (aka Ly Quan), Marion Peck, Mark Ryden, Natalia Fabia, Ray Caesar, Sage Vaughn, Shepard Fairey, Tim Biskup, Tracey Emin, among many others. Discuss this show here.

LA Art Show ’14: Littletopia

Last week when AM stopped by the LA Art Show, we made sure to pay a visit to the special Littletopia section curated by Red Truck Gallery. Featuring an array of artists and art that is seldom seen at the event, this part of the fair saw a healthy and steady stream of visitors. Participants included galleries like Sloan Fine Art, Breeze Block, La Luz de Jesus, Last Rites, Roq La Rue, Spoke Art, Thinkspace, and Varnish Fine Art. Openings: “Conjoined IV” @ Copro Gallery

Over the weekend in Los Angeles, the Copro Gallery opened the fourth edition of their sculptural group show curated by Chet Zar (interviewed). Entitled Conjoined IV: A New Beginning, the exhibition featured the work of many talented artists and sculptors out there, some of which work in the film industry. On the 1st of February, the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City will be hosting the opening for VERSO, a new solo show from Joao Ruas. LA Art Show ’14: Highlights

Yesterday, AM stopped by the 19th edition Los Angeles Art Fair at the LA Convention Center to see what the art world had to offer.
