James Jean was one of the secret surprises of this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii festival in Honolulu. The American artist was invited to the event as a guest first, but once he arrived to the island, he decided to try out his skills in creating a large scale mural for the first time in his career. Aside from lots of amazing murals and a huge list of side events, workshops, shows, parties, etc, POW! WOW! Hawaii is an opportunity for some unusual collaborations between participating artists. Upcoming: Risk & Nathan Ota – “Innocence Lost” @ Corey Helford Gallery

On Saturday, Feburary 15th, the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City will host a two-person show from RISK (interviewed) and Nathan Ota. As seen from their collaborative exhibitions in 2001 (LA & SF), the two reunited artists who started in the graffiti scene together over 25 years ago, have imagery that seems to fit so nicely together despite their divergent paths since high school. Last night, the Honolulu Museum Of Art School hosted the official launch of this year’s edition of POW! WOW! Hawaii with an opening of a big group show curated by the Thinkspace Gallery. For those who enjoyed the Seeker Friends prints from Jeff Soto (interviewed), he will be revisiting the series with a new set of Elements. Currently for sale as a timed release from the Riverside-based artist is Air (6″ x 6″), available at Prints on Wood. The annual POW! WOW! art retreat in Hawaii starts this weekend and 1xRUN will be on site to work on a special show at Loft in Space / Fresh Cafe set to open on February 14th. They have also partnered with Pangea Seed, a local non profit, to exhibit prints from their archives and their new Sametan figure customized by over 30 artists.
