LACMA Moves To Take Over MOCA

Back in 2008 when the MOCA was bailed out by Eli Broad to the tune of $30 million, there was hope this would stabilize the financial status of the museum. However, recent controversy over the direction of the Los Angeles institution under the leadership of Jeffrey Deitch as well as continued monetary issues have finally led to a formal proposal for a takeover by LACMA (which surprisingly came at the request of the MOCA board). On March 22nd, the New York-based Tauba Auerbach will be putting her paintings on display at the unique contemporary art institution – WIELS – in Belgium. Tetrachromat, which opened at Bergern Kunsthall in Norway in 2011 (covered), traveled to Malmö Konsthall in Sweden in 2012, will now soon be on view at the Wiels Contemporary Art Center. Starting today, the Tate Modern in London will be opening their doors to the public for the first full-scale retrospective of Roy Lichtenstein in many years. This momentous survey of the renowned American artist will include 125 of his most definitive paintings & sculptures and certainly should not to be missed if you are in the area prior to its close on May 27th. If you remember, late last year, we shared with you some photos of JR touring Japan to spread his Inside Out love in his giant photo booth / converted truck. Turns out, that was only a precursor for a show opening officially this weekend at the Watarium Museum in Tokyo. As you can see from these preview images, the French “photograffeur” is already busy prepping the outside and inside of the institution with his distinctive work. Photos via Alabaz and the artist. Openings: DZINE – “Victory” @ Dallas Contemporary

Chicago-based artist DZINE has recently opened another stunning museum exhibition, this time at the Dallas Contemporary. The show entitled Victory features an impressive selection of new pieces from all the medium’s DZINE is known for, including large-scale mandala paintings, tricked-out cars, ornate chandeliers and other installations. Together, the collection of works leads viewers to examine the human desires for success and recognition, through the lens of the artist’s Puerto Rican background. Victory is on view until March 31. Next month in Downtown LA’s Little Tokyo, the Japanese American National Museum will be hosting a group exhibition from three artists – Audrey Kawasaki, Edwin Ushiro, and Timothy Teruo Watters. Entitled Supernatural, the showing will give an opportunity for all three artists to explore otherworldly concepts, illustrating how traditional ideas have evolved and have been adapted over time. If this newest piece from Ushiro is any indication, this is one show you don’t want to miss (opening on February 9th). Discuss Edwin Ushiro here.

Maurizio Cattelan – “AMEN” @ Centre for Contemporary Art (Warsaw)

The always provocative contemporary artist Maurizio Cattelan is once again stirring up controversy, this time in relation to his current showing at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw. In addition to sculptural works for the museum, he has also placed a statue of Adolf Hitler praying on his knees in a former Jewish Ghetto where many Jews were killed or sent to their deaths by Hitler’s regime during the holocaust. We recently stopped by the New Museum to check out their latest artistic installation in the main lobby. Entitled She’s Crafty, this holiday pop up project gives 13 female artists a few days to bring their talents to share with museum goers. From Dec 12th to Dec 16th, Julia Chiang took stage and brought a mini temporary studio space where she created a host of works demonstrating a wide spectrum of her talents including her signature drip canvases and sculptures. Videos: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Black Christmas Tree” @ The Smithsonian

Just in time for Christmas, Cai Guo-Qiang has brought his pyrotechnics skills back to America (see Los Angeles earlier this year). Commissioned by the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian in Washington DC, the renowned Chinese contemporary artist executed three separate explosions in a performance entitled Black Christmas Tree described as acupuncture treatment for arts in the city.
