Openings: Fred Tomaselli @ The Brooklyn Museum

Last week, the Brooklyn Museum opened a mid-career survey of the work of Brooklyn-based artist Fred Tomaselli. Tomaselli—who grew up in Southern California, but has been working in Williamsburg since the ’80s—is known for his exciting mixed-media paintings, created by collaging figures and patterns from images of plants, birds and body parts clipped from nature field guides and magazines. Tomaselli also incorporates actual pharmaceutical pills into his works, before covering them in clear resin and then painting over top. The result is totally unique, combining […]

It’s been a wild few weeks of activity in which Yoshitomo Nara & Asia Society blessed the city of New York with a series of statues along Park Avenue, an Open-Studio Visit and a fantastic retrospective. Ever since the Deitch appointment at MOCA was announced, it was a question of not if, but when a major street art exhibition was coming to Los Angeles. Yesterday, AM attended the opening of Yoshitomo Nara’s epic retrospective at New York’s Asia Society. With anticipation building since attending his “Open Studio” session a few weeks prior, we didn’t know what more to expect from Nara and YNG/graf aside from the artwork being created by the artist and the cool construction of the “Home” installation. Preview: Clayton Brothers – “Inside Out” @ Madison Museum of Contemporary Art

As we mentioned last summer, the Clayton Brothers are set to open a fantastic museum show at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) over in Wisconsin this weekend. The brotherly duo will unveil twenty six paintings and three mixed media installations containing their wild color combos and electric characters. Check out a preview after the jump.

Coming to Moscow on Sept. 8th and running for three weeks is a show featuring legendary New York street artist Richard Hambleton. The exhibition, which celebrates his illustrious 40 year career, has seen stops in New York and Milan. It will include 30 original paintings, including 15 never-before-seen works by the reclusive 1980’s star. Eli Broad, who is arguably known as the most powerful man in Los Angeles, revealed this week where he will build his museum, which will house the spectacular Broad Collection. AM stopped by the opening of Yoshitomo Nara & design firm graf/YNG’s “Open Studio” at the Park Avenue Armory. Using the massive Armory venue as a central staging ground, the YNG crew hit the ground running; creating a modular structure/installation designed to be carted up Park Ave in the upcoming week for the retrospective opening September 9th at the Asia Society.
