After discussion what each participant’s plans were for the weekend, they commenced signing the all-in-one print featuring imagery from every artist created for this year’s […]

Preview: “La Luz de Jesus 25” Part II

After hosting the first part of their 25th anniversary group show last month, La Luz De Jesus makes room for the opening of round two of the festivities on November 4th. With such a rich and storied tradition and one of the early visionaries in the game, Billy Shire, as the gallery owner, the long list of participants necessitated splitting the celebration into two parts. Next up is a lineup that includes Ana Bagayan, Shawn Barber, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Bob Dob, Michael Hussar, Jordin Isip, Jessica […]

Openings: Risk & Nathan Ota – “That Was Then, This Is Now” @ LeBasse Projects – Culver City

This past weekend, Lebasse Projects hosted a traveling exhibition (see SF coverage) which featured collaborations by artists Risk and  Nathan Ota. Titled That Was Then, This Is Now, the show brought together the two long time friends for an exhibit which showcased a superb collection of artwork diplaying each artist’s strengths and respective styles. While Risk’s work often focused on graffiti-type iconography and lettering, Ota rendered the rest of the paintings with finely detailed settings and characters that at times felt surreal and strange. Although […]

Openings: Nathan Ota & Risk – “That Was Then, This Is Now” @ 111 Minna

Thursday evening, 111 Minna in San Francisco hosted the opening for Nathan Ota and Risk’s collaborative exhibition, That Was Then, This Is Now. The two respected graffiti artists first collaborated over 25 years in high school, but had lost contact ever since. It was not until last year, when Greg Simkins and Jeff Soto worked on murals with Risk (and knew about the two’s previous history), that it was suggested that they reconnect again. This lead to a collaborative mural at Hurley Space last October […]

Teaser: Nathan Ota & RISK @ 111 Minna

Continuing an unlikely collaboration that started at the Hurley Space last October (covered), Nathan Ota and graf legend RISK will be opening a show together on July 7th at 111 Minna in San Francisco. In actuality, their partnership started decades ago in the graffiti scene with time and distance leading them down different paths. In the end, mutual friends and the power of the internet brought them back together and it looks like they are making up for lost time. While most collaborations, in our […]

Preview: “Suggestivism” @ GCAC

Coming hot off the heels of Joe Sorren’s (featured) epic retrospective at the gallery, Suggestivism, a group exhibition curated by Nathan Spoor, opens this Saturday at CSUF Grand Central Art Center. It features over 50 different works (old and new) that embody Suggestivism, a term first used in the late nineteenth century describing an organic process of art making that suggests an ambiguous narrative. The exhibition features artists who illustrate ideas or subjects whose relationships point towards a loose and open narrative, constructed by the […]

Preview: Nathan Ota x Risk @ Hurley Space

Take a look at the date of the photo above. It was taken almost 25 years ago of Nathan Ota (who recently opened his solo in LA) and RISK (of MSK fame). And yes, surprisingly like many of the fine artists we follow, Nathan had a background in graffiti. After losing touch for a long time, the duo have reunited for a collaboration mural at the Hurley Space in Orange County. Stop by to take a look for yourself on Saturday, October 16th (6-10pm) and […]
