Recap: Okuda – “The Plastic Island” @ Mirus Gallery (Denver)

Today marks the last day of Okuda’s solo show at Denver’s Mirus Gallery entitled The Plastic Island. Including logos of corporations and brands with his signature characters in colorful compositions, the Spanish artist takes aim at the role of plastics in our consumerist society and its deleterious effects on the environment. Working with the geometric patterned style and vibrant palette that has become his trademark, the new body of work features both paintings and sculptural pieces that event incorporate actual plastic products. Streets: Okuda – “Air, Sea, Land” (Boston)

Earlier this month, Okuda completed his largest public installation project to date in Boston’s Seaport District. Curated by Justkids, the seven large-scale sculptures from the Spanish artist features his distinctive kaleidoscope of colors and geometric shapes. Air, Sea, Land is inspired by the intersection of elements at the dynamic waterfront neighborhood and continues exploring some of the street artist’s favorite themes – “the tale of life and coexistence, and the mythological edge where the animal kingdom encounters with the human world.” Discuss Okuda here.

Releases: Okuda – “Mickey’s Skull”

Spanish artist Okuda recently released a beautiful series of skulls featuring his distinctive patterned artwork. Produced in a run of 33, each Mickey’s Skull will come signed and numbered, measure 30x30x30cm, and feature a unique and vibrant color scheme. Streets: Okuda // Las Fallas Festival (Valencia, Spain)

Taking place in the middle of March every year in Valencia is the Las Fallas Festival (or Festival of Fire) which has evolved from the feast day for St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters into a five day extravaganza. The highlight of the event is the creation and destruction of a fallas (or ninots), one of which this year was designed by Spanish artist Okuda. Releases: Okuda x Flamingo – Sunglasses

Spanish artist Okuda recently collaborated with Flamingo to design a pair of sunglasses featuring his distinctive aesthetic. The shaded spectacles (available here for 95.00€) feature the prolific street artist’s signature colors & patterns on the frames. Upcoming: Okuda – “Lost Olympus” @ StolenSpace

Tonight (February 2nd) in London, StolenSpace will be holding the opening reception for Okuda’s new show entitled Lost Olympus. The new body of work from the Spanish artist features his representations of the mythological gods and characters from ancient Greece, painted in his signature multicolored geometric patterns. His vibrant imagery are sort of deconstructions as he mixes this many-hued approach with the other textures and patterns, a technique he also uses on the streets where he made his name. Basel Week Miami ’16 / Streets: Wynwood Walls

While in Miami, we of course stopped by the Wynwood Walls complex to see what new updates they had to their program this year. REMED x Okuda @ Campo Viejo Vineyards (Part II)

In 2013, Remed and Okuda collaborated on a sculpture in the vineyards of the winery Campo Viejo in La Rioja, Spain. Entitled A Bridge Between Sky and Earth, the installation which has become an icon for the wineries was recently repainted by the two artists in a colorful and vibrant palette. From the 1st of April through the 1st of May, Okuda San Miguel will be showing his AsiAfricalism solo show at Kallenbach gallery in Amsterdam.
