Openings: Joao Ruas – “III” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last week, AM had the pleasure of attending the opening of Sao Paulo native Joao Ruas’ show “III” at the recently christened new Thinkspace location. The young artist who replaced James Jean at the helm of the “Fables” franchise was on hand to greet guests who made it out to see his show. Weaving a collection of dreamy imagery, Joao used a diverse mix of oil, acrylic and other mediums while exercising his talents on his mysterious subjects. See the opening night action after the […]

As one of the cornerstones of the Pop Art movement, Roy Lichtenstein left behind a legacy of phenomenal art that has influence much of the art, design, and marketing that surrounds us today. The Gagosian Gallery in NYC (555 West 24th street location) is currently showing a collection of his works entitled “Still Lifes” with works spanning from 1972 to the early 1980’s and focusing on paintings, sculptures and drawings. This is a show that both young and old will find very rewarding in person. […]

Openings: Matt Leines – “These Songs Are True” @ Guerrero Gallery

Guerrero Gallery held it down with a cool series of work from Matt Leines that showed in their space starting last week. Opening along side Alex Lukas (covered), Matt’s latest show “These Songs Are True” took us to his imagined world where cultural elements are mixed with pseudo historical references to create a society of crazy human-esqe characters. Colorful masks or faces stare back at you with geometric shapes and colors forming fascinating environments. Check it out after the jump.

Openings: Shepard Fairey – “May Day” @ Deitch Projects (Part 1)

Last weekend, Shepard Fairey (featured) held his latest solo show “May Day” at the legendary Deitch Projects in New York City and effectively shut down a small part of SoHo with the crowds he drew at the opening night festivities. It seemed as though anyone and everyone who had an interest in art was in attendance. Celebrities, artists, gallerists, art affectionados, collectors and loyal fans of Obey Giant came from all over the world to attend the show. Fans traveled from Germany, Memphis, San Francisco, […]

Openings: Scott Campbell – “If You Don’t Belong, Don’t Be Long” @ OHWOW

One our stops in this past weekend’s art tour de force in NYC was Scott Campbell’s “If You Don’t Belong, Don’t Be Long”. Hailing from Miami, OHWOW Gallery created a hip Soho pop-up space that was new to AM eyes. The minty fresh location drew boatloads to the opening night festivities. Scott’s latest series of works definitely “wowed” us even more than anticipated than from our teaser and preview articles. Present were his signature cut-currency sculptures, intricate in design and often depicting objects, animals or slogans. […]

Opening: Thomas Doyle – “Collateral Damage” @ Lebasse Projects

Thomas Doyle is the man all girls and boys look up to and admire, not only because he creates fascinating and immersive works of art, but also because he is pursuing his childhood love, creating three dimensional worlds using only his imagination and two hands.  We are all much better off thanks to his career decision.  In his first solo show in Los Angeles, Doyle presents his recognizable sculptures of intricate miniature snapshots of life and for the very first time, photographs. More after the […]

Showing: Damien Hirst and Michael Joo – “Have You Ever Really Looked at the Sun?” @ Haunch of Venison Gallery

Have You Ever Really Looked at the Sun is a two-man exhibition featuring two artists who have known each other since 1991 when they met in Cologne — Damien Hirst and Michael Joo.  Although this is the first time the duo have worked with each other, they have been in correspondence and discourse regarding their respective artistic practices since they’ve met.  Joo’s work in the show explores ideas about identity, nature, and the body.  Hirst, as you might expect, focuses on mortality, life, and death.  […]

AM attended the opening of Mark Ryden’s latest series of work “The Gay 90’s: Old Tyme Art Show” at Paul Kasmin Gallery (previewed). As expected, the space was packed with art enthusiasts that were clamoring to see Mr. Ryden’s amazing talents. Mark certainly didn’t disappoint as he created a cohesive body of works that are as diverse as they are great. It seems to have it all, dreamy canvas paintings, detailed drawings, and even gorgeously rendered watercolors. It was a true pleasure to see Mark’s work […]

Openings: Rooms @ Scion Space

On Saturday night, AM attended the opening of “Rooms” at Scion Space (previewed). The show, curated by Roger Gastman, certainly brought us back to the old school days of youth.  A wide array of nostalgic goodness such as Laser Tag, VHS lined living rooms, Michael Jordan & Dream Team posters, elementary school desks, bus stops, gothic throwbacks and even an outdoor street/play area were included.  There was literally something for everyone to reminisce on.  The artists: Adam Wallacavage, Bill Daniel, Chris Stain, Dan Monick & […]

Openings: JR – “Women Are Heroes” @ Galerie Springmann.Varol

Germany got a healthy dosage of JR with his recent opening at Duesseldorf’s Gallery Springmann.Varol. The latest exhibition in JR’s  “Women Are Heroes” project, (previously seen in Paris and London) had much of the town buzzing. The gorgeous gallery was a great space for the French street photographer to showcase his talents. Both the inside and outside were fully utilized by the artist’s signature photo paste-ups. As teased, JR created another phenomenal wall installation consisting of 128 “speaker eyes” similar to the one we experienced at the […]
