Manifest Equality (previewed), the latest brainchild of the good people who brought us the Manifest Hope shows (covered), opened this week in the trendy Hollywood and Vine area of Los Angeles. Openings: Mike Giant @ Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea – Milan

Following his successful show last year at France’s Magda Danysz (covered), Mike Giant returned to the EU to open his “Welcome to Frisco” show last Thursday night at Milan’s Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea. Featuring his trademark clean lines and tattooed subjects, Giant’s showing looks to be a great introduction to the San Francisco aesthetic and culture for the Milanese people. Last week, Ryan McGinness (featured) had an opening in Madrid’s Casa Encendida. The show “Studio Franchise” was not only the NYC artist’s classic works, but also a glimpse into his studio. Ryan replicated his studio in a giant installation to give art goers an idea of how he came to create some of his gems. On Thursday night, Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama (interviewed) opened his latest solo show, “In Case You’re Lost”, at San Francisco’s Frey Norris. The vibrant collection of paintings, sculptures, and installations, consisting of what we affectionately call the “2.0” era of Matsu’s exciting career, were welcomed by the enthusiastic bay area crowd. Alex Prager’s third installment of her trilogy on Valley life, “Week-End” opens today, January 30th, in Los Angeles at M+B Gallery while the New York showing at Yancey Richardson will continue till the 20th of February. The hottest twins in the art world landed in Milan for their much anticipated second show with Galleria Patricia Armocida entitled “Nos Braços de um Anjo” (In the Arms of an Angel), which opened last night. Os Gemeos premiered their latest body of work, consisting of beautiful canvas paintings, sculptures and of course their famed installations for the lucky folks of Italy. Saelee Oh capped off the trifecta opening alongside of Josh Keyes (covered) and Doze Green (covered) at JLG. The LA based artist filled the “gallery II” space with a multitude of mediums that cohesively brought together the theme “Infinite Roots.” Her upbeat works featuring female figures and animals floating in an organic environment interwoven with one another were fun to experience. Especially noteworthy were her hand cut paper images that expressed much via simple silhouette contrasts reminiscent of the renowned Kara Walker, another AM favorite. […]

Morgan Slade opened his new show, “Fist of Fear, Touch of Death” last weekend at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery. Featuring ten new large scale photographs, Morgan’s latest body of work is most striking and provided a great introduction of his work to the Bay Area. His subjects, faceless models donning football helmets, stormtrooper masks, and mascot heads, pose playfully though it’s their anonymity and resulting lack of true beauty that perhaps grants such freedoms as modern day morettas.
