Openings: “Incantation” @ Roq La Rue

From candlelit backrooms to small forest clearings, Incantation sees Roq la Rue Conjuring up a group show based on ritual and mysticism. Occultism is often seen as heretical to mainstream society, but the beliefs and practices are centuries old and firmly rooted in nature and our surroundings. The exhibition features artwork from over a dozen artists, including a few sculptural pieces like Mandy Greer’s black feathered Huldra Adornment. Other artists took the opportunity to bring the subject matter out of the darkness like Jeff Jacobson’s Opulent Hex and Redd […]

Openings: Peter Ferguson – “Fire In The Map Room!” @ Roq la Rue

Last Friday, opening alongside CRG (covered) at Roq La Rue in Seattle was Peter Ferguson’s Fire In The Map Room! Dimly lit interiors and the moments right before dusk are exquisitely detailed in a muted color palette, with a style honed from his many years illustrating children’s books. The imaginative beasts inhabit Peter’s worlds nonchalantly, and while the human characters seemed intrigued at times, others seem bored or annoyed, like it’s an everyday occurrence. With backgrounds just as detailed as the main subject, one could spend […]

Openings: “Otherworld” Group Show @ Roq la Rue

Roq la Rue recently employed the help of many amazing artists to fill the walls for their Otherworld group show. The title of the show was also the theme, with the artists interpreting “otherworld” however they saw fit. With a roster this good, one month just wouldn’t be enough, so the show will be on display until July 27th. Check out more photos of the work from artists Martin Wittfooth (above left), Chris Berens, John Brophy, Peter Ferguson, Sam Wolfe Connelly, Casey Curran, Madeline Von Foerster (above […]

Preview: Seamus Conley & Peter Ferguson – “I Think We’re Alone Now” & “Black Jubilee” @ Roq La Rue

On Friday night (March 8th), Roq La Rue will be hosting the opening for exhibitions from Seamus Conley and Peter Ferguson. I Think We’re Alone Now consists paintings from the San Francisco-based Conley featuring of figures set against hazy and surreal backdrops that have a dream-like or sci-fi fell to them. In contrast, Ferguson is a painter from Montreal who combines the fantastical with scenes of explorers and adventurers, all rendered with the feel of early 20th century small town Americana.
