POW! WOW! ’15 / Streets: Mark Dean Veca

Invited in for POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here) for the first time this year, Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) took several days to paint a wall featuring his signature version of “Toile de Jouy” style patterns on Cooke Street in the Kaka’ako district of Honolulu. Because of the industrial nature of the area, the work from the Southern California-based artist and other participants in this year’s event are always a welcome addition in beautifying the local environment. Invited back to POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here) for a second time (see 2014), James Jean (interviewed) has upgraded to a much larger mural this time around. POW! WOW! ’15 / Streets: Olek

Currently displayed prominently in front of the Honolulu Museum of Art and sponsored by Anthropologie is the latest evidence of Olek’s crocheting prowess. The iconic outrigger canoe utilized by the Hawaiian people was transformed by the New York-based Polish artist with her signature technique for POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here). At 10am on Monday, Feb 9th, the mural painting part of POW! WOW! Hawaii 2015 officially begun with a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony at the Lana Lane headquarters in Kaka’ako in Honolulu. On the 10th of February at 6pm, 1xRun.com opened the doors to their 3rd annual POW! WOW! Hawaii print show at the Fresh Cafe in Kaka’ako hand in hand with Pangeaseed’s presentation of their Sea Walls releases. Offering rare copies of recent releases by POW! WOW! Along with mural painting that started off today and a museum show with Thinkspace Gallery (covered), one of the central events of POW! WOW! Hawaii is the print exhibition organized in collaboration with 1xRun.com. For their 3rd annual show they scheduled 30+ limited edition print releases featuring most of the artists from this year POW! Last night, POW! WOW! Hawaii kicked things off with a group show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum Of Art School (111 Victoria Street). Between the 7th and 14th of February, the Kaka’ako district of Honolulu will host another, the 6th edition of the POW! WOW! festival. Supported by RVCA, Montana Cans, and Hawaiian Airlines, the Valentine’s day week has become a central part of this large project that celebrates culture, music and art.
