Streets: RETNA @ Michael Kohn Gallery (Los Angeles)

As we reported last month, the Michael Kohn Gallery will be hosting a new body of work from notorious LA writer RETNA (featured). It looks like fans of the graffiti artist will not only be admire his works inside the space, but also his urban calligraphy gracing the facade of the West Hollywood gallery. Come check out his New Paintings and Works on Paper on Saturday night (September 15th) from 6-8pm. Photos below from MELROSEandFAIRFAX. Discuss RETNA here.

Upcoming: RETNA @ Michael Kohn Gallery

Coming up in September, the Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles will be unveiling new paintings and works on paper as well as site-specific installations from RETNA (featured). We last saw the MSK-affiliated writer back in March when he painted a mural at the famed Bowery and Houston location in New York and look forward to the continued evolution of his street hieroglyphics and urban calligraphy. Flying Murals of Wynwood

You may remember some photos that Futura sent us that we shared with you last month painted for Art Wynwood. That large painting, along with work from Retna, How & Nosm, DAZE, and Aiko was destined to be displayed at the Miami fair last weekend above as part of the flying murals of Wynwood project over the VIP lounge area. Here are now some photos of them hung up along with some bonus looks at an installation by Ron English. Check it out after the […]

Streets: Retna Mural on Bowery & Houston (Part II)

After spending some time with LA artist RETNA (featured) as he put his mark on the iconic Bowery & Houston wall in New York (covered here), AM headed back to see the finishing touches. As you can see, the MSK writer’s calligraphy is getting increasingly complex and is undecipherable for those who aren’t in the know. Luckily for those curious, we have a photo of part of the message he was painting. See this and more photos taken for us by Joe Russo after the jump…

Streets: RETNA x COPE2 (New York)

While in New York painting the iconic wall on the corner Bowery & Houston (covered), RETNA (featured) took some time collaborate with East Coast legend COPE2. Hitting up a wall together in the Bronx, COPE2’s signature bubble tags blended in nicely with RETNA’s calligraphic MSK stylings with what seemed to be matching colors. Check out more photos of the duo in action after the jump…

Streets: Retna Mural on Bowery & Houston (Part I)

Last week, we sat patiently as the beautiful mural created by Faile came down and was being washed white, wondering who was going to be bold enough to take on the legendary Bowery & Houston wall next? The challenger hails from the City of Angels and reps not only the west coast, but the renowned MSK graffiti crew. Retna (featured) makes his first official return to New York since his massive solo there last winter. AM was invited to capture this undertaking as the project started on a rainy Saturday. Undeterred, […]

Collections: Jeffrey Deitch

As collectors, it is always interesting to get a look at some “OPP” or “Other People’s Paintings,” especially when you know it will be awesome. You may remember a video tour of Jeffrey Deitch’s house in Los Angeles that we pointed out to our readers all the way back in 2010 when he had just moved in after taking on the directorship of MOCA. Well, here a closer look at his treasure trove of paintings and sculptures courtesy of Kathy Grayson when she visited his […]

Over the weekend  ZES & RETNA (featured), two key members of the MSK graffiti crew, came together for an exhibition titled Excavated Revelations in which each of their unique styles was on full display. Taking place at Known Gallery, this show was the first for ZES who’s known in the graff world as one of the most daring and talented members of the crew. His new body of work was made up both rectangular and squared-like pieces that featured an affinity for streaks and patterns often […]

Teaser: RETNA & ZES – “Excavated Revelations” @ Known Gallery

A little late notice, but tonight in Los Angeles, MSK brothers RETNA (featured) and ZES will be opening a show together at the Known Gallery. Introduced in their youth by their mutual friend AYER, ZES and RETNA led parallel lives through an upbringing in graffiti. Translating this shared history into bodies of work, the new pieces are collectively entitled Excavated Revelations. To give you an idea of what to expect, check out photos taken by AM correspondent Patrick Kawahara of some engraved & hand-finished works on found […]
