Sotheby’s Contemporary Evening and Day Art Auctions

Christie’s and Phillips de Pury have proven to have strong works available at their forthcoming auctions (check out our previews here and here). AM now examines Sotheby’s Contemporary Evening and Day Art Sales (February 10 – 11), which contain great pieces by some of our favorite artists, such as Feng Zhengjie, Yoshitomo Nara and Andy Warhol (above). AM dropped into Colin and Sas Christian’s debut UK show opening last night at Opera Gallery’s London location. Bumblebee Installation @ Thinkspace

If you remember, AM last hung out with Bumblebee last year, as he placed one of his signature phonebooth installations on the streets of LA. On Jan. 30, Gagosian Gallery on Madison Avenue opens an exhibition containing works by the most famous and controversial contemporary art superstar of his generation. Last week, important shows for two young artists, Mark Jenkins and Aakash Nihalani opened jointly at the Carmichael Gallery (their last show before moving to the new Culver City location). Mark Jenkins brought many of his classics indoors such as the paper tape carousel horse and faceless hooded mannequins. In addition, the gallery setting allowed him to remix and play a little with his repertoire like with his usual multi-limbed bodies formed into a side table. This year’s London Art Fair, held from January 13-17, attracted over 23,000 visitors and featured a wide variety of art to hold their attention. No matter how many art fairs we see or attend, we can never get enough of tremendous amount of paintings, sculptures, videos, installations, and other art on display – buffet style. It’s always interesting to see how street artists adapt their art to fit into a gallery setting, especially when they are so non-conventional (even for street art) like Mark Jenkins and Aakash Nihalani. Andrew Hem (interviewed) is opening an expansive show tonight at LeBasse Projects featuring paintings, drawings, and sculptural work. Entitled “One Leads to Another,” the exhibition was influenced extensively by his recent trip to Cambodia. Through his artwork, Andrew asks what if the millions of people that died during the Khmer Rouge period, especially the children had lived on instead? How might things have been different? Adam Wallacavage – Tarina Tarantino x Sephora Launch Pary

Fashion and art often intersect (Louis Vuitton x Murakami, Sprouse, and Hirst, Shu Uemura x Ai Yamaguchi, just to name a few) , so it comes as no surprise that we see Tarina Tarantino ask Adam Wallacavage to help her with the launch party of her new Sephora “Beauty Collection” set to be released in March. Looks like custom pink versions of Wallacavage signature octopus chandeliers were out in full force during the event. Take a look at more pics after the jump…
