Returning to Jonathan LeVine Gallery after a successful showing there in 2013 (covered), Mike Leavitt (interviewed) will be presenting a new body of work come May 14th. Entitled King Cuts, the new sculptures focus on renowned directors, molded in a way that recalls some of their most famous movies. Ruttkowski;68 in Cologne, Germany is currently showing I can’t look at your face anymore, a solo by Pieter Janssen aka Parra. For his second exhibition with the gallery, the Dutch artist, illustrator and designer created an all new body of work consisting of canvases, sculptures and objects. For Art Basel in Switzerland coming up in June, Daniel Arsham will be presenting his signature “fictional archeology” to fans and collectors in Basel with a twist. While mainly working in black and white in the past due in part to his colorblindness, the Brooklyn-based artist received specially made lenses that corrected this problem last year and has recently been experimenting with works in color. On May 7th, Athen B. Gallery will host a pop-up solo by Axel Void. Titled Nobody, the exhibition will open at 222 Broadway St. in Downtown Oakland at 7pm. The Miami-born artist, whose real name is Alejandro Hugo Dorda Meys has been known for dark, often figurative works that mixes text, classical painting and drawing. Meys also creates large murals on the street, which like his gallery work, regularly addresses social issues and the everyday problems of regular people while pointing out injustice and cruelty. Upcoming: Tom Sach – “Boombox Retrospective, 1999–2016” @ Brooklyn Museum

Tomorrow night (April 21st) in New York, Tom Sachs will be sharing his collection of bricolage sculptural pieces inspired by the iconic boomboxes of the 70s and 80s (also see SXSW ’15). Boombox Retrospective, 1999–2016 at the Brooklyn Museum features eighteen works that illustrate the sculptor’s ability to recreate everyday objects with re-purposed materials. Activating the space, the pieces will be programmed with playlists that go on sequentially throughout our public hours. Discuss Tom Sachs here.

Now showing until the end of the month at Roq La Rue, Danny van Ryswyk’s Tender Loving Darkness is a showcase in cutting edge technology and the painting techniques of yore. Ryswyk uses a 3D computer program to render his creations digitally. The digital render is then 3D printed into something than can be physically painted. Previews: Danny van Ryswyk – “Tender Loving Darkness” @ Roq La Rue

On April 7th, Seattle’s Roq La Rue will be welcoming in Danny van Ryswyk and his series of sculptures in a show entitled Tender Loving Darkness. The Amsterdam-based artist uses an interesting process to create his morbid works, starting digitally with a 3D program. He then prints these out with a 3D printer and meticulously hand paints each one in a process that can take weeks. Along with these dark sculptural renditions, van Ryswyk also has included some prints in the exhibition. Discuss Danny van Ryswyk here.

Armory Week ’16: Armory Art Fair

Earlier this month, New York City welcomed in the Armory Art Show. This annual event showcases some of the brightest names and current trends in contemporary art (@ Pier 94) with a portion dedicated to some of the classics from art history (@ Pier 92).
