At the end of last year, we had a chance to see for ourselves the genius of Yayoi Kusama while she was showing in New York (here & here). At about the same time, the Japanese artist also opened a show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai entitled A Dream I Dreamed featuring a diverse selection of large-scale installations, sculptures, and paintings. Currently showing at the Resnick Pavilion of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art through July 27rd is an exhibition featuring Alexander Calder’s kinetic sculptures. Calder and Abstraction: From Avant-Garde to Iconic is billed as his first museum show in Los Angeles and includes of course his signature “mobiles” and later “stabiles” that have made his work famous around the world. Berlin based artist, Daniel Weissbach, recently opened his solo at Ruttkowski;68 in Cologne, Germany. Titled Stellen (to set, to put), this show included new pieces from his ongoing series of works focused on taking apart of real, everyday places, and reinventing them in an artistic context. By mostly creating isolated sections of tiled walls, his prime idea is to show and put accent on the spaces between the tiles, where life leaves marks that are hard to remove. Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan recently opened A Position On a Map, a new solo show by Jim Houser (previewed). This is American artist’s second solo show with the gallery, and after three and half years, he is back with 20 new works that he shared with local art lovers. Openings: Li Hongbo – “Tools Of Study” @ Klein Sun Gallery

We recently stopped by the Klein Sun Gallery in New York to admire new works from Li Hongbo in a show entitled Tools Of Study. The Chinese artist and former book editor has taken his obsession with paper to new levels with flexible sculptures that bend our perceptions of reality. Basel Week Miami ’13: Ai Weiwei – “According to What?” @ Pérez Art Museum Miami

One of the exhibitions we made sure to stop by while in Miami for Art Basel Week back in December was the survey of Ai Weiwei’s work at the Perez Art Museum Miami. Housed in the newly designed building by Herzog & de Meuron, the showing spans the Chinese activist – artist’s 20 year career and features a wide range of works including photography and the large-scale installations like the amazing stacked bicycles seen above. Basel Week Miami ’13: Rubell Family Collection – “28 Chinese”

While down in Miami for Art Basel Week, we took the opportunity to check out 28 Chinese, the current exhibition at the Rubell Family Collection. As the name implies, the show consisted of paintings, photographs, sculptures and videos by 28 contemporary Chinese artists which were acquired by the Rubells’ during multiple visits to China between 2001 and 2012. Over the weekend in Los Angeles, the Copro Gallery opened the fourth edition of their sculptural group show curated by Chet Zar (interviewed). Entitled Conjoined IV: A New Beginning, the exhibition featured the work of many talented artists and sculptors out there, some of which work in the film industry. One of the stand out pieces was an amazingly realistic tribute to Andy Warhol by Kazuhiro Tsuji (seen above next to his work) that must be seen in person to be believed. LA Art Show ’14: Highlights

Yesterday, AM stopped by the 19th edition Los Angeles Art Fair at the LA Convention Center to see what the art world had to offer. Showing: Johnson Tang – “Living Clay” @ Yingge Ceramics Museum

Currently on view through January 19th in Taiwan is an exhibition featuring the surreal sculptures of Johnson Tsang. Entitled Living Clay, the exhibition sees the Hong Kong-based ceramic artist present a full repertoire of works at the Yingge Ceramics Museum including his whimsical takes on functional objects with characters in fluid play with the forms. Along with these fun pieces, Tsang also tackles social political issues like war, violence, and the influence of media in our children. Take a look at more photos below… Via Colassal.
