Michael Johansson – “Familiar Abstractions” @ Vigeland-Museet

Last week, we brought a look inside the studio of Michael Johansson in Malmø where he was busy preparing for his show at the Vigeland-Museet in Oslo, Norway. We now have some photos of the recently closes said exhibition, Familiar Abstractions, which features the tetris-like created cubes made from everyday objects that the Swedish artist is known for. Along with these color-coded assemblages, Johansson also filled in some doorways in with some installation work as well as displayed some grid-like sculptural pieces from rack-like materials. As Basel Week in Hong Kong comes to a close, we have another exhibition to share with you. Upcoming: Eishi Takaoka -“Waiting” @ Giant Robot 2

This Saturday (May 25th) marks the return of Eishi Takaoka to Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles for another solo showing. Entitled Waiting, the exhibition will feature the serene floating heads that the Japanese artist has become know for. Each sculpture comprises of carved wood painted with raw mineral pigments and although they display an outwardly calm façade, their bottled-up emotions manifest as outlandish formations that are often seen sprouting from each face.

Yesterday saw the opening of Asia’s preeminent art fair, Art Basel Hong Kong, housed in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC). With a strong tilt towards galleries based in the region, the fair boasted over 170 booths with a plethora of worthy art for collectors and fans to enjoy. After a succesful showing for Takashi Murakami in Los Angeles at Blum & Poe (covered), the renowned Japanese artist has returned to Asia for a solo showing at Galerie Perrotin in Hong Kong. The show which opened last night includes a selection of paintings & sculptures and was timed nicely to welcome in collectors in town for Art Basel (HK edition). Showing: George Condo – “Paintings & Sculpture” @ Sprüth Magers (Berlin)

Currently at Sprüth Magers, George Condo has a selection of new paintings and sculptures on display, his third solo exhibition in Berlin. The series of large-scale works are are the results of his ongoing reference to art history with the focus this time being Abstraction – i.e.: the lines of de Kooning, the forms and colors of Matisse, Tanguy and Klee, the all-over of Pollock, and Picasso. Tonight (May 18th) at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery, Souther Salazar will be presenting his fourth solo with the gallery entitled Souvenirs. Patricia Piccinini, the subject of one of our Art Focus features earlier this year, has taken to the skies with her latest work again showcasing her love for the grotesque and her strong imagination.
