As his upcoming show at NYC’s Joshua Liner gallery quickly approaches in just a couple weeks, Shawn Barber (featured) recently sat down with AM for a quick discussion on the art of getting, giving and painting tattoos. Known primarily for his sittings with tattoo legends and artists, Shawn’s latest exposition, “Tattooed Portraits: Chronicle” looks to be no less than the stellar work we’ve come to expect, as evidenced by the teaser images he’s sent our way. Full interview and show preview after the jump.

Shawn Barber, whom we visited with during his show in SF, will be opening his newest show, “Tattooed Portraits: Chronicle” at Joshua Liner Gallery near the end of next month. The latest in a series of shows built around tattooed portraits of his friends (like one of Thomas Woodruff above) and associated paraphernalia will open on April 24th in New York. A naughty little show is opening this Friday night (Feb 12th), appropriately we suppose, as Sunday is Valentine’s Day. “The Red Light Exhibit” features a pretty nice lineup which includes Shawn Barber, Paul Booth, Scott G. Brooks, Vincent Castiglia, Colin Christian (interviewed), Molly Crabapple, Camilla D’Errico, Ewelina Ferusso, Michael Hussar, Michael Mararian, Dan Quintana, Celeste Rapone, David Stoupakis, The Dirty Fabulous, Brian Viveros, Tony Ward, & Jasmine Wort. Curated by Genevive Zacconi, in association with Last Rites Gallery, the show will be held at The […]

Shawn Barber’s joint show (previewed) with Turf One entitled “Life-Size” opened last night at the Yves Laroche Gallery. A good size crowd showed up to take in the raw and honest portraits of tattoo culture that Barber is known for as well as street artist Turf One (aka Jean Labourdette) and his unique sculptural and caricature-like approach to painting. Take a look at all the pics after the jump…
Fresh off his show in San Francisco, Shawn Barber is already set to open another show, this time in Canada. In “Life Size,” a joint show with Turf One, Barber will be gracing us with more of his tattoo “portraiture” that we have come to know and love. The show opens tomorrow night, September 2nd, at Yves Laroche Gallery. More preview images from both artists after the jump.
Shawn Barber’s latest solo show, “Tattooed Portraits: Snapshots,” (setup) opened up last weekend at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery. Featuring a full body of fresh work, Shawn’s use of modern tattooed subjects (who range from Modern Body Art’s Jo Harrison and Blackheart’s Scott Sylvia and Jeff Rassier to MMA fighter/Seventh Son Tattoo’s Luke Stewart and comedian Margaret Cho) translates very well, showing a softer and sometimes even contemplative side of a culture often perceived in precisely the opposite light. The representation of a “lowbrow” art through a more […]
Saturday night, AM attended the opening of Joshua Liner Gallery’s summer group exhibition, which collects solid works from a very strong roster of artists, some of whom the gallery has shown previously and others of whom the gallery is working with for the first time. From the show, it is clear that Liner is actively evolving and maturing his gallery. And from the response from collectors and others at the opening, it seems that what he’s doing is working. More after the jump…
Yesterday, AM had the pleasure of visiting Shawn Barber as he was putting on the final touches of his solo show “Tattooed Portraits: Snapshots” at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery (teased). Shawn’s still life paintings and overall representation of tattoo culture look even more impressive in person. The show opens tonight, Saturday the 15th, and we for one can’t wait to check it out in it’s entirety. Process and installation pics after the jump.
