Previews / Setup: Faile – “Savage/Sacred Young Minds” @ Brooklyn Museum

With the opening fast approaching at the end of next week, Faile (featured) has ramped up their setup for their solo at the Brooklyn Museum. Entitled Savage/Sacred Young Minds, the exhibition from the locally-based artistic duo will features a diverse selection of works from their oeuvre including multimedia installations, large-scale paintings, and sculptures as well as a revival of the Deluxx Fluxx Arcade with their long time collaborator Bast. Upcoming: Sea Walls / Murals for Oceans Festival (Mexico)

From July 17 – 26, the island of Cozumel in Mexico will be hosting annual summer mural festival, Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans. For the second year in a row, Pangeaseed.org in collaboration with 1xRUN, Tony Delfino, and World Art Destinations, is organizing this unique event aimed to educate and inspire individuals and communities to protect the planet’s most important ecosystem – the ocean. Showing: Jan Kalab – “Extra” @ Villa Pelle

On the 29th of June, Jan Kalab (featured) opened his ninth solo show at the Villa Pelle in Prague, showing pieces created exclusively for this event. After introducing his art at fairs worldwide, this was an opportunity to put his work on display in his homeland. The Czech artist uses a lot of geometry elements and pure, bright colors in creating his pieces, which often blur the distinction between art and design. Streets: Urban Nation / Project M/8 – (Part II) – Maya Hayuk

After sharing the first set of photos from Urban Nation for the 8th phase (curated by StolenSpace) of their public arts program featuring Shepard Fairey, D*Face, Cyrcle., and Word To Mother painting four columns of a building, we now turn our attention to Maya Hayuk. For her part, the American artist worked amongst other murals painted before for the project, leaving her signature nterlocked stripes of color for her fans in Berlin to enjoy. POW! WOW! Long Beach ’15: James Jean

Over the weekend, James Jean (interviewed) completed one of his tallest murals yet for POW! WOW! Long Beach (see our coverage here). Painted on the side of the historic Varden Hotel in the heart of downtown, the striking black and white mural was placed next to a wall by Tristan Eaton (more on this later). A little while ago, we published an article with Kai & Sunny where we sat down for an interview ahead of their showing in San Francisco at the 886 Geary Gallery entitled The Matter Of Time. Takashi Murakami x Vans Vault Showcase @ Hotel Du Grand Veneur

Over the weekend Hotel Du Grand Veneur in Paris hosted a collaborative showcase between Takashi Murakami and Vans. Coinciding with this season’s Paris Fashion Week, the launch event featured shoes (adult and child), skate decks, surf boards, tees, and related artwork. as well as a roundtable conversation with the esteemed Japanese artist. Showing: John Knuth – “Nothing Without Providence” @ David B. Smith Gallery

You may remember awhile back, we shared a video from artist John Knuth and his unique form of markmaking. By feeding houseflies pigments and then allowing them to run through part of their life cycles on canvas on site at the David B. Smith Gallery in Denver, the Los Angeles-based artist was able to create some abstract paintings through his little assistants’ labor. Nothing Without Providence, a reference to the Colorado state motto, runs through July 10th.

Openings: Masakatsu Sashie – “Blind Box” @ KP Projects // MKG

Just this last Saturday night, Masakatsu Sashie was at KP Projects / MKG presenting some new works in the project room, complementing Jeff Soto’s exhibition in the main space. Entitled Blind Box, the series of oil paintings and drawings centered on the Japanese artist’s striking spheres of manmade objects. The suspended orbs are beautifully rendered and are overlaid over urban environments speaking to ideas of globalism and universality.
